Australia postpone Afghanistan series again due to 'conditions for women and girls getting worse'

By News / Wire

Cricket Australia has called off a series against Afghanistan for the second time in as many years due to “government advice”.

Australia’s men were scheduled to face Afghanistan in three Twenty20s this year under the International Cricket Council’s future tours program.

But CA has postponed the series that would have been played in the United Arab Emirates instead of Afghanistan, where the Taliban returned to power in 2021.

“Over the past twelve months CA has continued to consult with the Australian Government on the situation in Afghanistan,” the CA statement read.

“The government’s advice is that conditions for women and girls in Afghanistan are getting worse.

“For this reason, we have maintained our previous position and will postpone the bilateral series against Afghanistan.

“CA continues its strong commitment to supporting participation by women and girls in cricket around the world and will continue to actively engage the International Cricket Council and work closely with the Afghanistan Cricket Board to determine what actions could be taken to support the resumption of bilateral matches in the future.”

In March 2023, CA called off an ODI series against Afghanistan due to concerns over the human rights of women and girls in the country.

Upon CA cancelling the series, the Afghanistan Cricket Board reacted strongly, saying they attempted to politicise the sport”.

“Cricket Australia is undermining the integrity of the game and damaging the relationship between the two nations,” the strongly worded statement read.

But Australia still faced Afghanistan in last year’s ODI World Cup, held in India.

The match became an instant classic after Glenn Maxwell blasted an unbelievable unbeaten 201 to rescue Australia from 7-91 to an extraordinary three-wicket win.

Afghanistan fell agonisingly short of qualifying for the semi-finals of a World Cup for the first time.

Star legspinner Rashid Khan threatened to boycott the Big Bash League after CA’s decision last year.

But Khan eventually signed to return to play for the Adelaide Strikers, before injury ruled him out of the tournament.

I hate Sachin for the way he carried beyond his retirement. Same as Jimmie does for England. Otherwise Sachin was a great player.

I'm just not sure doing this unilaterally is the way to do this. The way to do this is to get their full membership revoked for failing to field a woman's team, which is a requirement. Work behind the scenes with other nations to achieve a common goal, don't do it unilaterally. It's particularly galling when we still play them in tournaments to ensure we advance... They should also stop postponing them and just cancel them. Then don't organise anymore; we have no games against Zimbabwe on the horizon (now that the ODI tournament thing is dead) and only one series against Ireland booked.

Gilberto, I would urge you and others not to be ignorant about the concept of dowry. Of course it can be twisted around and misused, but the concept in its purest form from back in the day is far from evil.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but his life wouldn't be worth the paper his birth certificate is printed on if he did (openly disagree with his country's govt).

That's a bit unfair Don on Jaques Kallis If you were inferring he bolstered his stats against Afghanistan then it would be difficult as he never played them in tests or ODI's ....but only 1 T20 Tendulkar never played them either

Thanks for supplying that information Sedz. I can't believe anyone would put down Tendulkar and Kallis by saying they picked off easy runs against Afghanistan . Two of the first picked in a world eleven in MHO

Correct me if I am wrong. I don't recall Rashid Khan ever declaring that he disagrees with his governments’ policy.

Back in his playing days, facing WI was a danger. Then Aus domination continued even though SA threatened to dominate every team. Sachin vs Aus:- 55.00 Sachin vs England: 51.73 Sachin vs SA: 42.46 Sachin vs NZ:- 46.91 Lets take the same SENA countries AWAY average Sachin at Australia:- 53.20 Sachin at England:- 54.31 Sachin at SA:- 46.44 Sachin at NZ:- 49.52 Let us learn to appreciate good batsman. Lot of Sachins stat padding came at the end of his returment season and it has only affected his home season not the overseas. But still he remains one of the best at his time.

Girls aren't banned from secondary and tertiary studies in Bangladesh. There's problems with dowry but legally the govt has banned it. Very different from a country where Dowry and suppressing women's rights is legal and encouraged.

Except that Sachin and Kallis never played vs Afghan. And Sachin had exceptional average vs Australia at Australia with players like Warne, Mc Grath and Gillespie. Enough said. I don't see any non NSW players come close to that in recent times against the Indian team in Indian conditions.

Precisely. It would take leadership and vision, qualities sadly lacking with this sporting body.

smacks of hypocrisy. Not really. An individual can always declare that they don't agree with their governments' policy. Where there *is* a double standard is in not applying a similar sanction against Bangladesh. They're not sexist, they slaughter anyone who criticises the status quo.

Better still, why not sponsor Afghan cricket for the women. Melbourne Victory have the Afghan women's football side playing in their youth league, a great gesture. If there's any women in the Afghan diaspora with the inclination then funds can be channelled into some sort of meaningful program.

As the Poms would say, what bollocks! CA are simply being cowardly, hiding behind this excuse to cancel a tour they never wanted to be involved with in the first place. If they were fair dinkum about making a stand on this matter, why haven't they lodged formal & public protests against Bangladesh, Ireland & Sri Lanka, all of whom have played international cricket against Afghanistan in recent years? I also guess this means we're going to forfeit our game against Afghanistan if they make the finals of the World Cup and we have to play them?
