The Collingwood Magpies and Essendon Bombers will do battle in their traditional Anzac Day clash, and it’s likely to be as tough an encounter as it’s been for years. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 3:20pm (AEST).
They have not had the strongest start to their season thus far, but Collingwood nevertheless hold a three win, two loss record.
Last week’s victory was arguably their finest yet this year, with a powerful 62 point win over the up and coming Brisbane Lions showcasing the best work the potent side can do.
Essendon, for their part, began their season rather poorly, but have steadied well in the past three weeks; their last victory an easy win over a lacklustre Kangaroos outfit.
So, then: a matching win-loss record, both coming into form and both coming off big wins against lower ranked sides. Not a lot seperates these two.
Collingwood arguably holds the advantage in midfield and forward power – but Essendon’s proven their no pushover, though: expect Joe Daniher to continue his good form, while Dylan Shiel has been nothing short of sensational in recent matches.
Of course, both teams have been hampered with injury frustrations; with Collingwood particularly vulnerable this week.
They’ve been forced to replace injured duo James Aish and Jamie Elliott, given a concussion and corked buttock respectively. Will Hoskin-Elliott and Levi Greenwood are added to the squad.
Essendon have been more fortunate, with Devon Smith and David Zaharkais returning from injury layoffs. Young pair Brayden Ham and David Parish are dropped.
Prediction
This is as even we’ve seen these two sides heading into an ANZAC clash in years. Collingwood’s have been champions four of the past five years, though, and they’re looking the more powerful side at this moment.
And within the realm of the marquee match, recent form counts for a lot. I’m backing the black and white, but would not be particularly surprised if the men from Tullamarine pull out a victory.
Collingwood by 16 points.

All very worthy comments. But,as I said, if he had kicked 1 goal instead of two points, the Bombers would have probably won, despite having such an inferior game. While Shiel had it and was kicking it the Pies didn't have it and had to respond, no matter how poorly he played. What did you think of the Stephenson throw that led to a goal?

I think he will sleep ok tonight Andy. I'd be disgusted with any pie fans booing Shuey collecting his norm smith personally.

I agree that the umpiring was poor. However for every bad decision that went against Essendon I can show you one that went against Collingwood.

Nothing personal against Pendlebury but the pies were gifted a close game and fans recognised it. And if fans wanted to boo Luke Shuey then absolutely they could if they felt strongly enough about it. You can't expect fans to have an emotional investment in the game but then say don't express yourself. Fans have a right to cheer or boo whomever they like. It is simply an expression of disapproval; it's not hate speech, racism or any other form of vilification. And I have a big problem with Buckley disparaging fans who are expressing themselves, he should be ashamed.

The umpires calls were anything from professional, especially the high free kicks... i dont think thats how proffessional competitions work.

Shiel wasn't just low on DE (58.8%). His kicking was just bad all day. Commentators even mentioned 4 or 5 times how he kicked it poorly into F50 to the wrong place or wrong side of a team mate. He didn't do the Essendon forwards any favours. I don't have anything against Shiel, I think he is an above average player but he just kept kicking for meters and not showing any footy brain at all.

Holy hell, 24 hours on and I'm still shaking. In a poor season so far, this was manna from heaven.

I hope not. Rules changes certainly have not done as advertised.

As a Collingwood supporter, I resent your use of that word PTS ????

Great game, Pies looked a touch better most of the day, bombers had there chances but blew it. No doubt whatsoever the Pies got the better deal from the umps. People need to get over booing regardless, it is going to happen every week. You can never stop it so whinging will achieve nothing.

Explain the justice against Pendlebury Andy. What did he do to deserve that as the person he is? Please explain? Following your line of thinking about dignity, class and sportsmanship, should the Pie fans have drowned out Luke Shueys Norm Smith acceptance speech because of an umpiring decision that potentially cost the Pies a flag ? Clearly we know which part of the crowd you would be in Andy. Let’s be clear, I am not calling into question their character with the booing escalating when Pendlebury began talking. I am calling it as clear evidence of a lack of class and character. There is no grey area – they were a disgrace to themselves, their club, the day itself and their families. I was there. I saw the ones booing and have zero doubt it went up a massive level when Scott started talking. It’s all black and white like the only flags being waved after the game.

Is bogans the new term for passionate fan with an eye for justice? If so, then call me bogan. If you have a problem with passionate fans expressing their opinion, I suggest you follow a sport like billiards so you can enjoy your silence. Nathan Buckley should hang his head in shame for what he said. That was the disgraceful behaviour I saw on the day.

Disagree. It is impossible to generalise across 50,000 people but the completely justified anger over the umpiring hadn't subsided when the presentation to the *ahem* winners began. It appeared to me as the fans letting the magpies know that the umpiring had had an undue influence on the game. This (the booing) is the only way for fans to show their displeasure and recognition of injustice in the moment. Trying to censor the booing is a disservice to the true fans who are passionate about their team and the good of the game. Denigrating the character of who are simply recognizing that an injustice has been done is pretty poor form even for the most one eyed fan. And shame on Nathan Buckley for daring to do so at the ground. What's next, everyone has to watch the game in silence? The booing was deserved and the fans had a right to do so.

You should also add a dreaded you're un-australian to that little beauty, not being worried by booing suddenly puts me in the Ivan Milat realm, guess I'll live.

It's not a comparison it's using common sense, you call Buckley a legend for calling out what you say is bogan behaviour from Essendon supporters but your story changes greatly when you believe the behaviour was warranted. Think that says alot about you Pete and you blindly joining the outraged rabble without thinking to intelligently about it.

I'm not saying the umps weren't inconsistent IAP but eberyone remembers the last qtr and forgets the Bombers were gifted goals early by awful decisions. Momentum in footy is huge and the Pies should have been further ahead early barring poor umpiring along with poor kicking for goal and into the forward line.

I don't support either team but the game was closer than it should have been. I thought Collingwood were a three to four goal better side, but somehow Essendon got close. I think Collingwood tired which let Essendon back in and made them look better than what they are. The pies moved the ball better had the better structure and carved the Bombers apart. Only some excellent early goal kicking kept the Bombers in touch. I don't get why everyone blames the umps as there were plenty of dodgy decisions all day and you play to the whistle not what you think should happen. I went to my first footy game 40 years ago and they blamed the umps then as well.

Don’t talk to Pie fans about umpires. Maynard block giving Sheed a Mark ring any bells?

Cat, usually the scoring gets lower as the season kicks in. Could we be seeing 8 goals regularly winning games by round 10?
