The Essendon Bombers will look to continue their strong run of form against the ladder-leading Melbourne Demons at the MCG. Stay up to date with the action on The Roar with live scores from 7:25pm (AEST).
It’s tough to see the sides above them faltering enough to open the door, but Essendon are doing their very best to keep themselves in the finals hunt. They’ve won four of their last five matches, with the lone loss being a good effort against Richmond that ended up with a deceptively lopsided margin.
But the heat gets raised again tonight, with the Demons ‘visiting’ the MCG from the lofty perch of first on the ladder. Melbourne have had a mixed month; they’ve decisively knocked off fellow contenders in the Western Bulldogs and Brisbane, but they’ve also been done in by non-finalists in Adelaide and Collingwood. They’ll be hunting a decisive return to form tonight.
The Bombers have lost three of their last four meetings with the Demons and also haven’t defeated them at the MCG since 2014.
Opening bounce: 7:25pm (AEST)
Venue: MCG

I'm sure... On that note Swans fans are definitely the most genteel (possibly because we aren't an AFL city). They have even been known to clap politely when the opposition scores a nice goal.

Bombers have been hovering around the eight before and not taken the next step. No guarantees it will simply happen next year and it seems they won’t quite make the eight this year.

The first half looked like a training run. 4 Goals each. Something that you would expect from sides with 6 wins from 14 games. Melbourne's scoring attempts were an easy way to hand possession back to their opponents. The Demons midfield decided to simplify things and pass it directly to their opponents. I have distant memories of maybe one Melbourne goal coming from an overhead contested mark. There was one, I'm sure. The less said about umpiring, the better. Close games does not necessarily mean good games. If this is the style of game the AFL is trying to produce then goodbye AFL.

He must be out of contract this year with the way he's finally having a crack every week

This is the first time I've genuinely felt Melbourne are a chance for the flag since I started watching in 1990.

Lots of people underselling melbourne atm. Essendon were nowhere it tonight and melbourne were a class above them. The dees didn't really get out of 2nd gear. Result was never in doubt.

Overrated and flash in the pan type side. Their game plan does not stack up against the best sides as they have consistently shown this year. Belted by the Lions, Tigers, and Port. Stringer, Hind, Tippa etc. all players that look good against weaker/depleted sides but go missing when things get tough. Lost to the Hawks (who are bottom 2) after being up for 40 after all! Not much chop tbh. Media giving them way too much credit for what they have done this year.

Not sure who they think is going to be better considering the Demons have beaten all contenders they’ve played by 4 to 6 goals.

We're 5-0 against the top 8 and 8-0 against the top 11. Our issue isn't holding up in finals. We're made to hold up in finals. Our issue is not having the Adelaide and Collingwood loss style lapses where we drop games we should win and therefore miss out on a top 2 or top 4 spot as a result.

Our defence returned to where it needs to be tonight and as a result we held Essendon to their second-lowest number of scoring shots for the season, and second-lowest score of the season. This would have been a larger margin and a more comfortable spectacle for us Melbourne fans had we not butchered the ball forward of centre and had we taken the chances our backs and mids created. Plenty of good looks turned into turnovers or behinds through a short forward line and set shot misses (McDonald, Fritsch and Harmes all in a row in the third quarter missed shots that most games they'd kick).

Ridiculous, we played nothing like this against Collingwood. Compare how easy the Pies found it to transition the ball and score with Essendon. Honestly have absolutely no idea how you could say this.

Melbourne are doing very well. They have been a bit shaky the past few weeks but their system stacks up. Beaten good sides so no one can say their draw has been that easy. Only a question if they can perform in finals but no reason it can't be their year. Too many people underselling them and their wins.

WC suffered many injuries during that game to key players. It's always tough for a victorian side to win interstate in perth, no question, but there was an element of luck in it. WC were well on top at one stage before injuries settled in i recall. All the bomber's other wins have been against average or badly out of form/injured sides. Nothing to get excited about as they should be beating those sides with most of their best players available anyway. Coulda, shoulda, woulda. Buckled easily when richmond applied the pressure to lose by 7 goals a few weeks ago, the same richmond side that just kicked only 22 points against an under siege st kilda last night pretty much.

West coast isn’t what I’d call a bottom tier team, we were robbed against gws, and Sydney, while against Richmond we led half way through the last quarter.
