Security guard attempts to break up fight between two players

By The Roar / Editor

It hasn’t been a great week in the AFL.

I wonder if it was his first day on the job. Briefing by his boss... 'Your job is to make sure everyone behaves. If anyone starts fighting you have to break it up and remove the offenders from the stadium. Now off you go and make sure you do a good job'.

Make that 55000. And who are you calling odd? Papal infallibility indeed. How could you distinguish foul and abusive language from barracking anyway? And from 30 or 40 metres away. Oh,I get it. Someone has to tell the Broader Security. What a great way to get rid of the 190 cm bloke in front who's using up two seats, hasn't washed for a week and who supports the opposition. How many witnesses do you need?

Matti it wouldn't happen in WA as the poor security guard couldn't hear himself think with 40,000 odd sandgropers yelling "BALL" constantly.

I think Col was heading down the path of referring to you more like Police Academies Eugene Tackleberry than Stallone in Cobra, but hey that’s just my take.

I am outraged and offended Mattician that you suggest we talk footy rather than about outrageous behaviour by players that necessitated in outrageous behaviour by a security guard that got some people outraged. In all seriousness I agree with your point. I like watching The Front Bar because it looks for humour and not looking for outrage and Marngrook Footy Show is tremendous in talking about Footy and not the other crap.

No, I'm an individual free enough to voice my opinion on the matter. If you are choosing to view me as enforcer of the roar much like Stallone in cobra then that's your choice. I say again that if something is happening you don't like boycott it, but after the preceding week of groans for Frankie allow my cynicism that it won't happen regarding Saturday night. Tasmania's events are just plain funny, sh#t happens.

So are you a ‘Roar security person’ telling people they shouldn’t comment on a problem that is at the moment one of the biggest issues involving the AFL.

Then boycott if that was what happened, it's not that outrageous to stand up and be counted rather than turn up and cop it. Wouldn't happen in WA for the independent nature of our stadium and before that Subi. If you need a set of guidelines to dictate your behaviour instead of civility and self governance that is a sad state of affairs. Again I reiterate we should be talking footy not this sideshow malarkey. Curnow kicked 7 on the weekend, bonts first quarter, the performance of Ed Curnow and the double teaming of Cripps are more worthy subjects rather than chucking the toys yet doing nothing about it.

It has become an outrage because supporters are not fully aware exactly what is acceptable or unacceptable behaviour that may get them kicked out of a game that they have paid money to attend. They are aware that foul language, drunken behaviour and physical violence will get you kicked out but unaware what else will. Two young Carlton supporters were evicted on Saturday night, not for swearing, not for abusive language but simply because they were barracking too loudly. An elderly woman who likes to barrack loudly was approached by security staff and told to quieten down. Tell me do West Coast supporters not ‘barrack loudly’ and would they be happy if they were approached or evicted because of it.

Umpires have been told don't mark the ball but that didn't stop a one off incident at Subi once. It was mistake not a major issue, this is becoming a borefest of outrage when instead we should be talking football. If security is an issue organise a boycott and put pressure on through financial means.

So he nearly made a mistake. Was the near mistake a reaction or the fact he didn’t know he didn’t have the authority to run on the ground during play and try to interfere with players? Surely security people would have been told they can’t Do that - or have they been. Seems to me this is one of the major issues with this crack down by security people, they haven’t been properly educated as to what is and isn’t acceptable behaviour.

He's a labour hire contractor who nearly made a mistake, happens everyday in Australia as we have become a labour hire workforce. Stop being namby outragers everyone and harden up. Sh#t happens! Be Australian and toughen up.

What on earth are you talking about? Nobody punched anybody in that video. A bit of push and shove and wrestling on the field is none of the security guard's business. If that action had taken place 5 metres away in the stands then he would have been expected to stop in and do something because THAT'S HIS BLOODY JOB. It's the umpire's job to look after what happens on the field, and he's right there doing his job. The security guard is there to keep an eye on behaviour in the crowd. He had no business setting one foot on the inside of that white line. Perhaps you'd like to see the security guards paying free kicks, too? While he's busy attempting to interfere with what's happening on the field, he has his back turned to the crowd, which is where his actual job is.

comments defending the security are laughable. the match ground is officiated by umpires only. security are there to protect that area from outsiders and/or intervene in off-field trouble. jeff kennett is, sadly, on the money. people are being employed with insufficient knowledge of the environment they're working in.

What would the out come have been if one the players had in the heat of the moment abused or worse assaulted the security guard, for all the payers know it could have been a spectator who jumped the fence. These blokes are glorified lollypop ladies.
