Deano's diatribe

The power of the storms hitting parts of Australia seems tame as I deal with a massive man-flu, which could easily take down a…

AFL

2019

i detest it too. another negative you’ve not mentioned is that it also leads to more commentators with no knowledge of the “local” side. this means they range from not knowing the players, not knowing any facts or stats about the local team, talking about “over there” for the match venue, to actively barracking against the local team in favour of their own, usually nsw or vic team. brett lee is the worst of them all.

Fox's commentary cost-cutting has taken their coverage to rock bottom. It's time they were called out

sir, may i subscribe to your newsletter please?

How Cricket Australia killed my interest in the professional game

clarkson is whinging about tackles not being rewarded, but i think he’s off the mark here. recently the umps have been penalising the player who works hard to get to the ball first and rewarding the player who waits and then tackles. that’s not the game we want. if that means we hafta accept tackles not being rewarded for a while, so be it. reward the bloke who gets the ball.

Six talking points from AFL Round 4

all the ridiculous media attention when that rugby player moved to the nfl for a few weeks.

The ten most cringe-worthy moments in Australian sport

bwaaa hjaaaa haaaaa, Warner!!!!!
you have got to be kidding me?
they’ve just made a complete joke of the already dodgy award.

Tight count looms for Allan Border medal

spot on. i made the same point here when this started. in addition, CA regular make copyright claims against anyone who puts a cricket clip on social media, effectively stopping people from talking about the game.

The blind leading the blind: Australian cricket follows Rugby Australia into oblivion

no. no, it really isn’t.

Four predictions for this week's AFL grand final

The essence of 6×6 is correct here, gws use the boundary route more often.

Four predictions for this week's AFL grand final

it is 2019. if a ‘keeper isn’t making runs, he is a burden.

Usman Khawaja axed for fourth Ashes Test

it doesn’t matter if he cares, it is a simple process. misbehave and you no longer get to complete and make money.

At what point does Nick Kyrgios have to be banned?

fair enough. he’s had a decent chance and the other bats have simply performed better. except paine, of course.

Usman Khawaja axed for fourth Ashes Test

for mine, he can throw tantrums, sledge opponents, hug spectators and break as many racquets as he likes, but when you disrepect the ump, you’re warned, then fined, then given a ban. after you come back, there are no warnings, just more bans.

At what point does Nick Kyrgios have to be banned?

the whole thing rubs me the wrong way i’m afraid.
a huge sporting corporation raking in millions of dollars putting on a pointless tv event to ask fans who already spend their money every season to donate to charity. bugger off. the amount spent on broadcasting and advertising for just this game would fund a research lab for months!
the AFL need to go back to a respectful event and front up a sizable donation themselves, without begging the public every three minutes for a donation.

The EJ Whitten game makes a mockery of a legend

i admire tim paine, but this is the right decision. let’s face it, until being picked out of the blue as the aussie capt, he was never considered a great captain or a great bat, just one of the better keepers. if he looked like making a run i would stick with him, but you can’t carry an under-performing player, even if he is skipper.

T-Paine worth more than just runs to the baggy greens

so…is nobody gonna mention the war? i mean…paine being dropped/jumping on his sword.

Aussies need a reshuffle but only one change for fourth Ashes Test

hahaha, nice that you believe that, but no, the freo board gave ALL those decisions to ross and that sacked ceo.

Ross Lyon, the Bell tolls for thee

ross is a terrific self promoter, but the evidence shows he’s an awful coach for a club’s long term success.
he took a punt at the saints and used every single resource to try and pinch a flag, knowing he could/would walk out once he’d bled it dry, leaving nothing for the coming years at the club. and he did it without even coming up trumps.
he has done the same at freo. there is no next generation coming up to fill the void left by retirements. and the number of players that have left and gone on to success is unusually large.
the club is in disarray and a good part of the blame lays at ross’ feet.
although i hate the fact he trots off with half a million in his pocket, i am glad to see freo make the tough choice and show him the door.
the fact that they couldn’t wait one more week says a HELL of a lot.

Ross Lyon, the Bell tolls for thee

the picture of Fyfe is confusing in a discussion of finals.

What the finals race will look like at the end of Round 22

freo simply cannot afford to sack lyon, so they have to endure another season of pain.
pyke is on his bike, absolute certainty.

The AFL coaching massacre isn't done yet

for what it’s worth, i agree. i sent the following to my tipping comp after the round 20 cats/freo game.

Chris Scott won’t admit it, but the Geelong Junket Experiment went according to plan. Geelong don’t bother with the petty pizza and beers at the coach’s place approach. They give the whole club a week off at the casino in Perth, a month before finals. Pure genius. And also a wonderful reflection of AFL cultural values.
Coach Scott actually gave the game away when he said, “It’s not as if we have been taking out a big group of players and saying ‘we don’t mind if we lose these ones because of our ladder position’”.
But it is. It is exactly that. Geelong is using sports science to manage their players. Somehow the media have convinced themselves that Geelong aren’t going to make an impact in the finals. But let’s face it, if brains were a disease, the AFL media would be very healthy.
I think outside of the media, the only person who didn’t realise that Geelong were tanking was Ross Lyon, who had the smug, satisfied look of somebody who has just sprinkled sugar on their watermelon.
Freo don’t value technology as highly as Geelong. At Freo , the role of technology doesn’t extend much beyond investing in a new knife to cut the oranges. The sour, not playing finals variety of orange.

The highs and lows of a long AFL season

glad that sherlock has logged in.

Ben Stokes will be MVP: Three bold Ashes predictions

well, stokes will need to be mvp in the first test, england have overlooked archer and gone in with anderson, broad, woakes and stokes. i reckon they needed the firepower of archer.

Ben Stokes will be MVP: Three bold Ashes predictions

solid team based on solid reasoning. siddle is the safer pick but i’d be tempted to try neser. other than that, i wouldn’t change a thing.

Sure things and surprises in my Aussie Ashes team

i like paine and he’s a very good keeper, but average of 35 with no runs of late and little potential for big scores versus average 28 as a youngster with huge potential for big scores makes it easy for me, seeing as we never bowl spin anyway.

VOTE: Pick your Australian 2019 Ashes XI

that’s not saying much. most people would prefer malthouse to ross lyon.
