Round 9 of the NRL premiership continues this evening when the Manly Sea Eagles take on the Gold Coast Titans at 4 Pines Park in Brookvale. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 5:30pm (AEST).
It’s 2nd vs 10th tonight. Whilst you’d think the result would be fairly cut and dry, there is only 3 competition points separating them. With such a compressed ladder, every win is crucial and so it will be in this game.
The Sea Eagles got home 22-16 against the Tigers last start, after being behind with less than ten minutes on the clock. They probably do have an excuse for being flat, after a torrid victory against the Storm the week before. When the game was on the line against Wests, they stood up.
Daly Cherry-Evans has been in sublime form so far this season and is justifying his price tag. The Sea Eagles have a good blend of youth and experience, with long term campaigners like Jake Trbojevic and DCE playing alongside exciting talent like Haumole Olakau’atu and Kelma Tuilagi.
There are a number of changes to the first grade line up, with Brad Parker being out with a knee injury. Reuben Garrick moves into the centres and Christian Tuipulotu returns on the wing. Josh Schuster is injured and he is replaced in the halves by Cooper Johns. Tuilagi returns from concussion and pushes Ethan Bullemor to the bench. Tom Trbojevic has been named but will need to pass a fitness test on his groin.
It’s hard to know how losing to the Dolphins, after being up by 26 points, will impact the Titans. Gold Coast fans will be hoping that their team comes out breathing fire after being embarrassed last weekend in Brisbane.
The Titans have a solid roster, with Tino Fa’asuamaleaui and Moeaki Fotuaika the standouts in the pack. If they can establish go forward, AJ Brimson can be very dangerous around the ruck. David Fifita, when involved, can create all sorts of problems for the opposition defence.
Justin Holbrook has resisted the urge to make wholesale changes, promoting Klese Haas and Joe Vuna to the bench and dropping Kruise Leeming and Thomas Mikaele. Jojo Fifita and Phil Sami swap positions, with Jojo named at centre.
The Sea Eagles are a different proposition at Brookvale. The Titans will come out with plenty of purpose, but they will come out of this one with nothing to show for it,

Gives a lot more context to the decision. Might be best for both the Raiders and Rabbits in the long run. But kudos to Jack and Ricky for being so honest.

I don't think I've seen such emotional scenes in sport Choppy - well in League anyway. It was like watching a father saying goodbye to his son. Incredibly personal and unashamed emotion shown by the two of them. I wasn't surprised to see Jack getting cut up when he started to talk about his team mates. But I was surprised to see Ricky getting so emotional. You can see how much Jack means to the team and Ricky. But you can understand that after 14 years at one club he needed a change.

for the Gold Coast winning is a lot like housework ... its a lot of effort and even though you'd like to do it every week you end up doing it once a month

Not yet mate. But I’m not impressed by the Manly coaching staffs lack of game plan adjustment. Against the Storm, keep it tight, bash them in the middle. Get in the trenches. But the Titans? They were easily opened up last week, so shift the ball, move their big men around. And continue to attack 2 or 3 from the ruck as there is always open space. I know they watched last weeks game as they ran an identical play as the Dolphins for Keppie to score. But that was it. Bitterly disappointing.

Cherry-Evans is saving himself for State of Origin.

Sorry I was confused due to their lack of impact. Aloia put in another inconspicuous effort, Sipley, who’s usually pretty decent was a liability tonight

Man up you blokes. There is NO excuse for losing to these clowns . I call them clowns, but the joke is on us. You realise that now, the strategy is what is going to happen next year.

Too early to start a call for reinstatement of Dessie?

Turbo looks like he's about 40 years old. Always looks like he's pulling up lame after a tackle. Such a shame as he's one of the best players in the comp to watsh in full flight.

The thing is I think they have a good squad, outside of Turbo. Big boppers up front (particularly Paseka). Dangerous edge forwards in Tuilagi & Olakau'atu. Great halfback. Speed in Saab, Garrick and Koula (when fit). But the game plan is awful. Has been for weeks. They shifted early last week and scored an 80m try. Then they stopped. And then didn’t even bother shifting at all tonight, for the entire match. Truly baffling to think you can break down NRL defensive lines by running one out over and over again. Something needs to change.

That's one result I didn't expect. Manly is a better team than what they served up tonight, a dish that would send their fans home hungry. Congratulations to GC for a wonderful effort against, on paper, a better side. There is some serious discussion to be had at Manly.

He's obviously been carrying injuries. Seems his body is going to keep mucking up his footy career ?

Same if Schuster is back. How is it in Canberra, Geoff? Great win today. Hard to see Jack Wighton and Ricky in the post game images. We bag these blokes but sheesh that sort of stuff shows what it means to them

David Fifita looks like he has just got changed and ready to warm up to play. Im more tired than he is.

Well done to the Titans and particularly Keiran Foran- you deserved the win. Alarm bells for Manly though. Too many plodders and not enough heart.
