Super Rugby finals Week 1 fixtures: Who plays who, where and when?

By Scott Pryde / Expert

The fixtures for the Super Rugby quarter-finals have been confirmed by SANZAAR, with all four games to be played on Friday and Saturday, and just one not to be held in Australia and New Zealand.

The Crusaders, who had the top spot on the overall ladder wrapped up weeks ago, will open the finals on Friday evening with an all New Zealand derby against the Highlanders, who had a big win in their final match of the season over the Waratahs.

It’ll be another mouth-watering clash on Saturday morning (AEST) as the Chiefs, who are fresh off a demolition job of the Rebels, travel to Buenos Aires to take on the red-hot Jaguares.

That match has been pushed back to a Friday evening in Argentina, which makes for a fairly reasonable 8:05am (AEST) or 10:05am (NZST) kick-off time.

The first week of finals will wrap up on Saturday evening, as the Hurricanes take on the Bulls in Wellington, and the Brumbies host the Sharks in Canberra after sneaking into a home finals spot thanks to top spot in the Australian conference.

"the closeness of this table was mainly due to the rubbish reffing.." Good grief, CUW...

The difference in classification between the pantherinae and felinae is in the structure of the hyoid bone (which helps the various muscles in the throat in sound production). The purrers have a fully ossified (properly bony) hyoid, while the roarers have a partially ossified, more flexible hyoid. There is argument about what truly constitutes a purr - it's argued that the big cats "purr" is only on exhalation. Here's a spaced-out link to a decent recent bit about it: https:// www. sciencealert. com/these-are-the-largest-cats-known-to-purr (to use the link, just paste it into your browser and removed the spaces). (the embedded youtube clip has lots of different types of cats to see and hear - good for youngsters)

I don't know about tigers, leopards and jaguars, but lions can purr (or at least make a sound very like it). I was camping in Africa and woke up needing a pee, but also heard deep purring. Unzipped tent, and the ranger called out not to make sudden moves. He was sitting, gun across his knees, while on the other side of the campfire half a dozen lions were watching (you could see the reflection of the fire in their eyes). They'd already killed and eaten that night, so weren't dangerous, just curious, and were fed cats sitting near a warm fire. Lions do 'purr'!

Ah, 2000, what a season that was. We went right into the heart of the Lion's den that game. Brumbies won the regular season, had beaten us two weeks previously, were playing at home and their team included such names as; Joe Roff and Andrew Walker at the back. Rod Kafer and Stirling Mortlock in the centres. Larkham and Gregan steering the ship. Big Jim Williams running off the back of the scrum. Justin Harrison and David Giffin for tall timber. Patricio Noriega, Jeremy Paul and Bill Young - how's that for a front row. And George Smith was on the bench! Eddie Jones up against Robbie Deans. Nobody gave us chance for that game. No one had ever won a super title away from home. But Larkham didn't ghost anywhere that day and we were equal to the freezing night air (like hardy Cantabrians should be). Mortlock found no room through the middle and Roff saw not enough ball for his famous chip and chase. The headline ran, 'Brumbies humbled, Larkham injured'. We smothered them with defence and they had no plan 'B'. Merthens kicked us home for a famous one point win, 20-19. First away win ever. First three-peat.

Loftus pick 3 games played in aus or nz where the penalty count was 60-6 against the travelling teams! Then tell us about why you’re upset but don’t complain

Here in Southern California, we have two types of cougars. Ones are called mountain lions, the others are two legged creatures that also purr and take your wallet's contents with them.

travel will affect them for sure even if they win in Argentina , have to come back and play Hurricanes. Crusaders managed the travel one time - cannot remember many others who did...

The first four were locked in. Mathematically, there wasn’t much room for placing elsewhere for some teams but it’d be interesting to entertain other matches. Jaguares Sharks Hurricanes Highlanders Brumbies Bulls Crusaders Chiefs Not sure any of the home fans for those matchups would be too happy about that but as a neutral they’d make for enthralling entertainment.

The SA teams feel the same playing in Aus or NZ under their hometown refs. We just don't moan about it all the time here

Comment that the brumbies didn't earn a home quarter final is BS. They cleared number 5 by 7 points and 2 wins.
