It is very hard for me to write these words as a devoted Canberra Raiders supporter. However, the statistical truth is my calling: the stats show that the Roosters are just too good.
2019 NRL Grand Final
» Match report: Roosters go back-to-back
» Player ratings: Sydney Roosters
» Player ratings: Canberra Raiders
» WATCH: Video highlights
While the valiant Green Machine deserves their shot at glory, theirs is only a puncher’s chance.
This is the first time in the NRL era that the second placed side has met the fourth placed side in the grand final.
This is the ninth time that the second-placed side has featured in an NRL decider. Four times that has resulted in victory: Bulldogs 2004, Sea Eagles 2008, Sea Eagles 2011 and Storm 2012.
This will be the fifth time the fourth-placed side has made the decider. 75 per cent of the time they have triumphed: Storm 2009, Wests Tigers 2005 and Ricky Stuart’s Roosters in 2002.
That side was the only fourth-placed side to beat a grand final opponent that finished the home-and-away season higher on the ladder.
In the NRL era the higher paced side has won eleven of the 20 deciders. Since the current finals system was introduced in 2012, the lower placed grand finalist has won four of the seven encounters.
Notably, no fourth-placed side has won the decider since the McIntrye finals system ended in 2011. Further, only one fourth-placed side – the 2013 Sea Eagles – has made the decider since then. Perhaps ominously, they were beaten by the Roosters.
Regardless of the winner, this will be the 17th time in the NRL era that the premier will have gone through the finals series undefeated.
Head to head
This will be the 64th meeting of these two clubs going back to 1982. The Roosters have the advantage 35 to 28.
The last ten between the sides have been split five apiece, with the Roosters winning both games this season, and putting the biggest score on the Raiders of any side this year: 30.
The last time the Raiders worst score conceded in a season was only 30 points was in 1994.
This will be just the fifth final between these sides, with the Roosters having a 3-1 advantage. However, the last time they met in a finals game was in 2004 when Ricky Stuart was coaching the Chooks.
These two teams have never played each other at this venue before.
Finals records
This will be the Roosters’ 43rd finals match in the NRL era. The maximum number they could have played in is 80. So they have played in almost 54 per cent of every possible finals game they could have.
They have won 25 of the 41 NRL finals they have played (61 per cent). This will be the Roosters’ eighth grand final appearance in 22 seasons. They’ve won three of seven so far.
The grand final will be the Raiders 20th final in the NRL era. They have won seven and lost twelve. They have only played in 24 per cent of the possible finals matches they could have. This season is the first time they have won two finals games in a row since 1994.
Defence wins premierships
The two sides that have made it are the second and third best defensive sides of 2019.
The Storm averaged just 12.1 points conceded a game in 2019. The Roosters average 14.4 points conceded a game, the Raiders 15.1.
The stats are overwhelming that the best defensive side wins the premiership.

Year | Winning team | Season defensive ranking |
2018 | Roosters | First |
2017 | Storm | First |
2016 | Sharks | Third (beat best defence) |
2015 | Cowboys | Fifth (beat third best) |

2007 | Storm | First |
2006 | Broncos | First |
2005 | Cowboys | Seventh (beat sixth best) |
2004 | Bulldogs | Third (beat best defence) |
2003 | Panthers | Seventh (beat second best) |
2002 | Roosters | First |
2001 | Knights | Seventh (beat best defence) |
2000 | Broncos | First |
1999 | Storm | Fifth (beat sixth best) |
1998 | Broncos | First |
In 52.4 per cent (11/21) of the NRL seasons so far the best defensive side for the year has won the decider. Three more times the higher ranked defensive side in the decider won.
So two-thirds of the time, being the best defensive side in the grand final has equated with winning the game.
However, on four occasions (2016, 2008, 2004, 2001) the best ranked defensive side was beaten in the decider. So there is a glimmer of hope for the Raiders.
Grand final experience
The Roosters have masses of NRL grand final experience. The Raiders have virtually none. Twelve of the Roosters 17 players for the 2018 decider are returning for this game.

The Roosters boast 551 more games NRL experience among their 17, with an average of 32 extra games played per player.
There are 81 more representative games for the Roosters at an average of five more per player.
The Roosters also have played a cumulative 111 more finals games than their green opposition, with an average of six more a player.
Why the Roosters are going to win
All the stats above in regard to defensive precedence and experience are in the Roosters favour. To compound this, the Roosters are better than the Raiders in virtually every key team statistic.
When it comes to defence, the Roosters look pretty good.
Defensive stats | |
---|---|
Penalties conceded | Roosters – 7 (#7 NRL |
Raiders – 7.3 (#3 NRL) | |
Tries Conceded | Roosters – 2.3 (#2 NRL) |
Raiders – 2.6 (#3 NRL) | |
Line breaks conceded | Roosters – 3.8 (#2 NRL) |
Raiders – 3.8 (#3 NRL) | |
Missed Tackles | Roosters – 23 (#2 NRL) |
Raiders – 23.5 (#4 NRL) |
While there isn’t much in these stats, they all favour the Roosters. However, when we get to the attack stats, the gulf between the two sides really opens.
Offensive stats | |
---|---|
Tries | Roosters – 113 (#1 NRL) |
Raiders – 93 (#6 NRL) | |
Run Metres | Roosters – 1497 – (#1 NRL) |
Raiders – 1429 – (#5 NRL) | |
Line Breaks | Roosters – 5.6 – (#1 NRL) |
Raiders – 4.3 (#8 NRL) | |
Tackle Breaks | Roosters – 27.7 (#3 NRL) |
Raiders – 25.7 – (#8 NRL) | |
Kick Return Metres | Roosters – 118 (#1 NRL) |
Raiders – 96 (#8 NRL) |
These team stats show that, while the Raiders defence is almost as good as that of the Roosters, their attack is well off the pace set by the Bondi Boys.
And that really comes home to roost when you look at the leading individual stats for each team.
Offensive stats – individual | |
---|---|
Tries scored | Mitchell – 19 (#2 NRL) |
Tedesco – 17 (#3 NRL) | |
Tupou – 15 (#8 NRL) | |
Croker – 13 (#11 NRL) | |
Try Assists | Keary – 28 (#2 NRL) |
Hodgson – 16 (#16 NRL) | |
Cronk – 15 (#19 NRL) | |
Tedesco – 15 (#19 NRL) | |
Line break assists | Keary – 29 (#1 NRL) |
Tedesco – 18 (#11 NRL) | |
Hodgson – 15 (#22 NRL) | |
Tackle breaks | Tedesco – 134 – (#1 NRL) |
Nicoll-Klokstad – 77 (#13 NRL) | |
Line breaks | Tedesco – 29 (#1 NRL) |
Croker – 17 (#9 NRL) | |
Mitchell – 16 (#11 NRL) | |
Run metres | Tedesco – 187 (#1 NRL) |
Nicoll-Klokstad – 160 (#10 NRL) | |
Tupou – 159 (#12 NRL) | |
Papalii – 138 (#24 NRL) | |
Taukeiaho – 128 (#34 NRL) |
While Luke Keary may be the most statistically dangerous playmaker on the field, there is no question that James Tedesco is the superstar. He’s won everything he can win this year.
With these stats the odds are very good that he’ll add a Clive Churchill medal and premiership ring to complete the Tedesco slam. If the Raiders can’t limit the boy from Camden they will cop a flogging.
Things for Raiders fans to cling to
I can’t make it all doom and gloom for the Green Machine. There are some things to bring them some hope:
The statistically predicted score
If you compare both sides for and against for the entire season the Roosters will win 20.5 – 17.8.
If you compare the Roosters record in Sydney against the Raiders record on the road the Chooks come out 23.7 – 16.7 winners.
If you compare both sides’ records against the other top four sides the Roosters will win 19.5 – 16.2.
The likelihood is that the Roosters will win by four points and the total points for the game will be under 40.

My gut feel is the Roosters will be too strong. If the Raiders can weather the first half hour or so without letting the Roosters get away they’ll be right in it. But they can’t just sit back on their heels and absorb pressure. They need to get the balance right between stopping points and playing back at the Roosters. I don’t think the Raiders are without hope but they need things to go right for them. The Roosters don’t need as much to go their way to get the win. Anyway...go Raiders...!!!

Rudy, This so true. Only one Canberra player has played in a previous grand final. When I quickly looked this morning, every roosters has one previous GF under their belt, while Cronk has 8. Cronk will be the key. A GF is unlike any other game. Keeping your emotions in check requires guys around you who have been there, done that. Canberra have such poor GF experience. It will be a massive mountain for them to climb, just controlling their emotions.

The Raiders are in this game up to their ears. The Rooster are a very well drilled, team with some match winners but they're certainly not unbeatable. The biggest concern for me is Leilua and a couple of the other less experienced players ability to not have a brain fade. If they don't give up cheap possession to the Roosters, the Raiders certainly have enough smarts, power and talent in certain positions to win.

What side info do you have that they want it more?

I backed the raiders to win it a few months back so definitely wanting them to win… now that it is GF day, I am worried the roosters will turn it on and blow them off the park. There’s no doubt the Roosters are the better overall team, Raiders will need to produce their best 80 mins and also put some of the roosters stars off their game – they will need to be in the Tedesco, Keary, Cronk, etc all game and turn this into an arm wrestle. If this is allowed to turn into an expansive and high scoring game, the raiders won’t be able to outscore the roosters and it could be over quickly… has to be a tussle. The opening 20 mins of each half is the key, Canberra need be on top or at least contain the roosters during those periods. If the Raiders can do that, it will just add to the pressure already on the roosters as heavy favourites which could mentally have an impact if they aren’t running away with it…Canberra just need to roll with the momentum shifts, play smart footy and make every opportunity count. Anyways on the Canberra bus today so best of luck to you Tim and the green machine fans.

Plenty points towards the Chickens getting up in a fairly easy win. Good thing is that the competition has been often very unpredictable and I'm hoping that this continues and the Raiders get up with a 39 to nil victory. I've got a gut feeling of sorts that the Raiders are going to get on top of the Chickens and that will expose a few weaknesses that aren't so clear now. Raiders by 13.

And ya can’t underestimate big game experience, on the part of both players and the coach. Robbo will write history today. He hoodwinked the Storm last year and he’ll have a few tricks for Ricky’s boys today.

I'm guessing you must have put this piece together days ago Tim? You'd have been getting ready for the GF, this time yesterday. Good on you for treating us to stats backed by clear explanation. I hope your boys get up, only because, as a Dragon's supporter, I know what it's like to wait decades between premierships.

All 34 players will have desire. But to win, you have to be smarter, not just “want it”. When I was a young bloke, I had the desire to want sex as often as possible. Unfortunately, I wasn’t smart enough often enough, to know how to close the game. If only I knew then what I know now! But the knowledge is useless to me now. Like they say, you can’t put an old head on young shoulders. So let’s agree all the players will have desire. But the smarter players will have the confidence to trust themselves, their mates, & their systems. That will be the difference.

If the Raiders are in front with 15 to go it will definitely be 1969 again. The Raiders could do a very decent impersonation of the 69 Tigers if they had to.

Tim, The truth of a certainty is found often enough in the breech. So on that score, the Raiders are in this game. However, I expect the Roosters to win, & win well, for all the reasons you give, plus others. The grand final is theirs to lose, if they don't give the Raiders sufficient respect. You would think there are too many experienced players in the Roosters lineup to allow hubris or complacency to derail them. If the AFL grand final is any guide, where the experienced Richmond Tigers trounced the inexperienced GWS Giants on the grand final stage, then the Roosters will win, & probably win easily. For the Raiders, it's worth reminding them that 50 years ago, way back in 1969, through tactical superiority, the Balmain Tigers upset the so very hot, hot, hot Souths Rabbitohs. Although the Rabbitohs were more talented man for man, the Tigers won by playing smarter football. For the Raiders to triumph, Ricky Stuart will need to tactically outsmart Trent Robinson & his players give the Roosters no room to execute their expansive skills.

I don't think this is even going to be close. Roosters 13+ easy and the game to be over by half time with half the Roosters backline scoring tries. Weirdly I think Croker is going to have a great game....got him to score two tries.

I'm with you Taree. Love Tim's work and his support for the Green machine and I'm not surprised that the statistics suggest a Roosters victory but there are plenty of intangible factors that go towards a victory that you can't put a number on including ticker, desire, commitment, and mateship. The Raiders have the support of the whole Canberra community, surrounding rural areas and Raiders supporters scattered all over the country who have waited for years for this. And they will be playing for former players who experienced the good days and those that didn't. I just feel it is all building up to this win for the ages. It will come down to who wants it more and that will be the Raiders. Enjoy the game mate.

How do you measure that ? It purely an assumption or more likely, your desire. They all want it.

The definition of stats = "past performance is not an indicator of future performance". Sound familiar?

You can't quantify 'desire'. There is no stat on that. The Raiders have it, they'll want it more & will play accordingly.
