AFL trade period, latest news and rumours: Day 3

By Stirling Coates / Editor

The AFL’s free agency and trade periods are in full swing now, join me from 10am (AEST) as we look at all the done deals, rumours and talking points from the most exciting part of the offseason.

Reigning premiers West Coast are set to feature heavily on day three, with the news that Andrew Gaff would officially re-sign with the club throwing spanners in the works of several potential deals.

The Eagles are fast approaching the deadline to match the offer made to Scott Lycett by Port Adelaide, while the lack of compensation for (not) losing Gaff means they have very little currency with which to appease Geelong in their quest to sign Tim Kelly.

With clubs having had two days to feel each other out, hopefully we’ll start to see some more meat and potatoes developments today.

How will the Lachie Neale situation unfold? Can Brisbane get enough chips to satisfy the Dockers? Does Neale even want to make them move?

How does Rory Lobb’s decision to pick Fremantle impact the Dockers interest in Jesse Hogan? Does that, in turn, impact a potential move away from the Gold Coast by Steven May?

Who out of Carlton, Hawthorn or St Kilda will be the ones to woo Dylan Shiel?

What are Sydney – suddenly flush with cap space – up to? Who will North Melbourne set their sights on now with Gaff out of the picture?

There’s a lot to sift through, it’s sure to be another exciting day.

Tune in to The Roar as we bring you all the latest trade news and rumours as they bob up.

Sorry, the former in early September, latter mid-August. Goddamn, I miss the edit button.

Cerra is the only one I can think of that's re-signed after Bennell; the latter signing in early September, the former mid-August.

After 3 years in a row of not being able to get on the park it is a big call to say "they get all their injured players back next year" - the consistency of the issue suggests it won't be that simple.

Don. Bennell was re-signed in August. Stop acting like you know more than other people.

People said dogs paid overs for boyd and he won them a flag. No such thing as overs if you win a flag.

Same industry sources that said we were no chance to land him.

What's strange is some Freo fans like the idea of Neale looks up and sees Kersten over Fyfe looks up and sees Lobb and hogan. Any way Paul as sure as Kelly will be at wce Neale will be at Brisbane next year, the chest beating dance just needs to happen.

Well that does it for today's AFL trade coverage. Thanks again for joining me for a day that made up for a small quantity of announcements by giving us one big one. Every new recruit from the last 2 years plus Blakely and Langdon...about 12 of them. Just because you are unaware does not mean it's not happening. Gives them great salary cap control while retaining talent like Neale.

Shiel is contracted and there are multiple clubs chasing him. GWS would be nuts to go for any future picks on their own. Essendon has kissed their #9 pick goodbye and at least a second rounder in some shape or form. There might even be some pick swaps added on to that.

And you saw what happened those 2 years when they didn't get on the park. Get them on the park and they are flag bound.

I thought the half a dozen off field incidents showed he's not fully committed to the team.

They'll buckle. Their CEO has taken over list management. He won't want to be remembered as the guy that let Lobb and Hogan slip through his hands.

Not wild at all. Based on the Hawks 2 main needs for a KPF and a quality mid.

Moore is only 22 Birdman. Cloke was what 30+ when he went to the Dogs?

GWS got two first rounders for Treloar and still had to give back a second rounder. Shile won't command quite the same price, given his age, his looming free agent status next year and GWS's cap squeeze.
