The West Coast Eagles host the Melbourne Demons in a season-defining clash at Optus Stadium on Friday night. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 8:10pm (AEST).
The rematch of last year’s Perth preliminary final has arrived under different circumstances to what many would have assumed a mere two months ago.
The Eagles have five wins from their first eight games, but the reigning premiers have been unconvincing overall.
Attacking just hasn’t been a strong suit for West Coast in 2019, ranked 16th in the competition for “points for”.
Jack Darling and Josh Kennedy are a shadow of their former selves at the moment, while Oscar Allen is still trying to find his feet at senior level. Jack Petruccelle has been the most impressive forward for the Eagles.
Willie Rioli’s return is huge, despite being a young and inexperienced player. Arguably the club’s most skilled player, Rioli has a mix of the skills provided by Petruccelle and Ryan, which means he’ll fit in perfectly alongside the two.
These small forwards will provide a great challenge for the underwhelming Melbourne defence, which has conceded the second-most points over the first two months of the season.
Touted as potential premiership favourites, the Demons are 3-5 and a complete mess at the moment – the defence isn’t great, the ball movement is stagnant at times and there is no scoring power.
In recent weeks, it appears as though Melbourne has reverted to a Paul Roos-style of footy, in which a greater emphasis has been placed on blocking the defensive 50 and trying to work from there.
Given the talent in the team, this is an extremely disappointing development in the system, but it may well provide the Demons with the ability to sneak some results while they come up with a stronger attacking plan.
What stands out in this game is the strength of West Coast’s defence and how well it matches the current tactic of Melbourne’s forward 50 entries.
The Demons tend to just kick high, directionless balls into attack – Jeremy McGovern has had sweet dreams all week.
The inclusions for the Demons aren’t overly inspiring, and Jake Melksham’s injury is simply huge for the club.
Expect Bayley Fritsch to be playing across half-forward, while debutant Oskar Baker will likely be stuck on a flank as well.
The Eagles are settled at the moment and will need to stay strong defensively to win this game.
Vardy will lose the ruck battle, which places a higher value on the pressure applied by Mark Hutchings and Elliot Yeo in the centre square.
Melbourne definitely has a chance to win this game if it doesn’t bomb the ball inside 50.
A run-and-gun approach is what can trouble the Eagles, and the home team is vulnerable against quick ball movement and genuine speed.
Ultimately though, West Coast’s tackling and ability to share the ball to the outside seems to be too strong for Melbourne at the moment.
Sheed and Gaff are thriving in the current system, and it’s an area Melbourne doesn’t deal with particularly well.
Both teams need to win this game for different reasons and it makes for an intriguing contest.
West Coast by 15 points.

Exactly. The haters can't see what's in front of them-just like 2018! It's a different season, hard to compare to last year, but Eagles are just turning over and getting the wins. they cranked it up in last quarter and took the game-that's what good teams can do! Watch out, they're coming..might drop some games, but theyre building and This season Nicnat will be back.

Some people just hate it when West Coast win and will make any excuses why we won . Melbourne were shocking in front of goal including a absolute shocker from petracca 10 meters out. The Eagles won so suck it up and accept it

Umpires cost dee's the game? Really? Stupid comment. Inaccurate kicking in front of goal cost them the game. If you watched the game with both eyes you would have noticed Frees were missed on both sides

West Coast definitely lifted in the last quarter. Melbourne squandered too many shots on goal. Two non decisions by the umps also helped swing the game. Umpires need to consider their positioning given that the tv cameras and commentators are seeing what they are not seeing.

I like it, the "Were Flying High" always brings back memories of the Cousins era.

Result ok, but worrying lack of impact from the bottom 8 players. Real simple skill errors that were definitely not as apparent last season. I’m far from convinced...

Virgil does say so. That thing stinks on a whole different level. Worse than the Port Power ditty.

On a HIGH note....... Great Mark Liam Ryan...........But some TERRIBLE umpiring decisions cost The Dees the win they deserved. Although the count was 21-21 ( which is unusual for a Eagles ???? home ground as they normally get 10-12 more free kicks than the opposition) it was the crucial ones that count......... Lewis Jetta gets a holding the Ball decision which cost the Dees a goal ( will cost Eagles ???? two weeks when he faces the tribunal this week for a dangerous tackle ) and a throw from another Eagles player that was missed resulted in another goal...... Even the Commentators could hold there tongue ???? about the perceived HOME GROUND ADVANTAGE..........No wonder the Demon players dropped there head the last ten minutes. Couldn’t blame them. Anyway a injury riddled Demons before the game ( not to mention the three consussions during the game ) proved the Eagles ???? are PRETENDERS this year

What the slump tackle? Or the lean tackle? I honestly don't see how he could have used less force. Unfortunate that Tim hit his head. Although he played out the game though didn't he? And apparently we're in an outcomes based contest or something, so he should be fine. But then again the beloved fox footy team did their best impression of a lynch mob, so who knows? And hey he's no Brownlow medallist, so I expect 6 at least.

For some reason people are being overly negative with west coast - they’re going along better than ave 6-3 having beaten 2 of 3 (Pie and gws) supposedly best teams at the moment and one of the losses was at Geelong... I think people are getting carried away with their poor form, not travelling well comments

Keep trying you got to get some different material. Final free kick count was 21/21 so how that impeded Melbourne I'm unsure but if they kicked straight then they might have won, but alas wce did instead and we still keep winning:) 6/3 pretty good for a hungover average side.

That would be a tough call to make depending on who won.

Another unimpressive performance by the premier against an undermanned and umpire hindered opponent. They are still in contention but more and more questions raised each week. One and done?

I shall be bold and say the Eagles will not make an early finals exit. Their wins especially at home against an undermanned and out of form team running 15th does not auger well. The Crows are finding some form and will test them at AO. I still think the race to the GF is open and with injuries and who and where you play when you have them, as the year progresses, may shape the finals in a season where nearly any team is capable of knocking off the top four on its day.

Probably the best l have seen him play all year. A real game changer and an elite player. Had some real intent tonight. I was mentioning to a mate tonight before the game that l thought he had been a bit down this year and hasn't been as impactful. That changed tonught. I don't think he has been bad at all. Been following since him since his Brisbane days.

Fair enough, on a different note how bloody good was Yeo game.

True there is more to just kicking goals but thought he was your least effective forward all night and was beaten in marking contests most of the game.

West Coast 85 - 69 Melbourne West Coast held off a strong challenge from Melbourne in its 16-point victory on Friday night. The Demons were arguably the better team over the first three quarters, however inaccurate kicking kept the reigning premiers in the game which was ultimately the deciding factor. James Harmes (30 disposals, six tackles) was excellent for the Demons, continuing to be the club's most reliable midfielder in 2019, while Clayton Oliver (29 disposals, 11 tackles) performed solidly. Max Gawn's dominance was a key reason for Melbourne's competitiveness, finishing with 56 hitouts, yet Liam Ryan's spectacular mark over him in the final quarter was perhaps the most fitting highlight of the match. Elliot Yeo (26 disposals, 16 tackles) was stunning in the midfield, finally recapturing the form he showed in 2018, while skipper Shannon Hurn (33 disposals, 13 marks) was unbelievably impressive across half-back. The Demons failing to win that match rules the club out of any top eight berth it was hoping for, and now they will try and save face. West Coast keeps winning regardless of performance and once they hit their straps, they'll be dangerous.
