England will be looking to build a big first innings lead against Australia today, as they resume 4/267 at Edgbaston. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of Day 3, starting from 8pm (AEST).
The game was very much in the balance heading into Day 2, as England were 0/10, looking to chase down Australia’s first innings total of 284.
The day started well for Australia, as James Pattinson removed Jason Roy fairly early, which gave Tim Paine’s side the perfect start.
However, that was about as good as it got for the tourists, as England piled on the pain. Joe Root compiled a classy 57 from 119 balls, but a brilliant effort from Peter Siddle off his own bowling dismissed the English captain.
Joe Denly could only add 18, as Pattinson trapped him lbw. Jos Buttler quickly followed, as Pat Cummins found his outside edge, which saw the danger man dismissed for five.
It was Rory Burns though who has been the difference between the two sides thus far, as the opener finished the day 125 not out.
Burns put together an innings which many of the Australian batsmen could learn a thing or two from. There was nothing flashy about the innings, but he showed a fighting spirit, which allowed him to get through the tough spells of bowling.
Ben Stokes is also 38 not out, which will no doubt concern Paine’s side. Day 3 really could be the turning point for this particular Test match.
England are clearly going to take the lead, but if Australia can get a few early wickets, it keeps them in the contest.
If Australia do not take a wicket or two early, England are going to compile quite a first-innings lead, and it will be decisive in terms of who wins this Test.
Pattinson does look Australia’s biggest threat with the ball, so he will need to have a big day. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of Day 3, starting from 8pm (AEST).

God you’re boring. If’s buts, maybes who cares it didn’t happen he is injured. What IS happening (and you’re in danger of missing with all your scenario pondering) is a wonderfully even test match. What’s particularly interesting and will be more so in the narrative of the series is the enormous frailties for both sides. I’m not convinced Jofra will be as dominant with the red duke as he was in the WC which will put question marks on the pommy attack (if Anderson is out). This is magnified by Moeen’s lack of confidence. Less said about some of Australia’s batsmen the better and sometimes I feel as talented as our seamers are they don’t bowl to a consistent plan. All in all should be a cracking series and if Aus can squeeze a W at Edgbaston then that’s a huge result for the series given our poor record here.

Josh in england at Lords and Oval I think Marsh performed as good as anyone with the ball. His wickets there were crucial in 2015 much like the internal Australian game. Hard to make a case for him in any other test match but he's the only medium pacer we have in any event. He may be needed on one of those pitches and in those two matches we pummeled england in 2015 only to lose in every test up north

You just can't rely on marsh for runs if they come its bonus but no doubting his bowling at lords, oval in 2015 which was crucial to winning the match and also the internal aussie game. Im not sure id select him outside of england where the fifth bowler and a medium pacer is needed. Also need to see the state of the pitches. If its another eng v ireland test then its a green deck and he's not needed

All the back seat selectors trashing this team... You are aware we havent won in the UK for almost 20 years? England never lose at Edgbaston We were 8 for nothing and now have a genuine shot at winning the first test. Pull your heads in and celebrate the team rather than bagging them.

JL looks like he has picked our openers because it's a good warm hearted story of redemption. Sadly they are their to make runs not to make everyone feel warm and gushy about wrong doers getting a second chance.

250 would be a monster target on a 5th day egbaston pitch

Yep, especially to tail

Finch has demonstrated many times he is not a test opener at any point. We certainly need Starc, there is a serious lack of penetration when the lower order was in. Don't think Carey has demonstrated that he bats at this level other than in ODIs.

Suspect we need a lead of 450 plus with the bowling line up JL and the selectors have offered up. Not sure we have the stick men to get there though...

The thing with Stokes is that he is in England's top 6 specialist batsmen even without his bowling, and now that Anderson is injured they're testing his ability to be a frontline bowler (which he is currently succeeding in, might I add). By extension, you could definitely suggest that Stokes could carry his weight in aside as a bowler or a batsman. Mitch Marsh can do neither. No chance for mine.

I'd persevere with Warner - he got a couple of good ones - but Bancroft looks awkward and completely out of his depth

I know that this is a jaundiced view, but weren't Warner and Bancroft part of the trio of white knights miraculously riding in to save the day? It seems, again, that they've left it to Smith to carry the load. It would be nice if Australia had an established, focused and working opening pair? Where, oh where, could they find such a thing? Oh wait...

The Aussies really missed Starc's ability to mop up the tail. Worrying signs with both openers struggling. A lot resting on Smith, Head, Wade and Paine to get us to a lead for 250

Any chance of Warner and Bancroft contributing? They’ve replaced the 2 incumbents and have given the team nothing but 2/3’s of the boos from the crowd.

Basically you are dropping wade! Thanks Tim!

Lyon has bowled 40 something overs already, going to be huge pressure him in the 4th innings. 200 lead will make a game of it, 250 might be pretty hard. Head and Wade must do their jobs!

I'd rather have a 5th specialist on a road Maybe starc comes back in

There is no way Finch will come into the side. If changes are made i could imagine selectors would be more likely to pick these players. Harris Bancroft/Warner Khawaja Smith Head Marsh/Marnus/Paterson Paine Pattinson Cummins Starc/Neser/Siddle Lyon
