"That's rubbish": Reds in utter disbelief after copping the two worst decisions of the year

By The Roar / Editor

Bryce Hegarty and Filipo Daugunu had a right to be horrified by the decisions to hand them yellow cards.

JD, I am on record and have even written to the editors to complain about the Facebook standard title writing of these clips, bit it has fallen on deaf ears. It is a glaring fault, possibly the only major fault, of the Roar site.

It wasn't a knock on at all. The ball went backwards relative to the Reds direction of play. The penalty was for intentionally throwing/batting the ball into touch. Ridiculous.

It's the same as a failed intercept attempt given as penalty. Some are genuine attempts some are just sticking the hand out. The ref cannot judge whether the player misread or not, just adjudicate based on the pictures seen. It was more obvious that the ball was battered out rather than grounding attempt. If the player gets it wrong then he gets it wrong just as with intercepts, contact in the air and high tackles.

Disagree mate. The action prior to the contact with the ball was parallel to the ground. To me that indicates he wasn't trying to ground the ball. After the contract he then stops himself from face planting.

Bobby, the ref in the SR AU GF did his absolute best to keep his cards in his pocket to make the final an even spectacle. I’ve watched the game three times now and noticed that Wright was not penalised or carded for a neck roll, Valentini escaped a red for head high contact and Swain didn’t get a yellow or penalty try for deliberately collapsing the maul at the end of the game with the Reds camped on the line and the Brumbies repeatedly infringing. I was in the crowd at that game and I was prepared to wear those decisions and accept the Brumbies win.

It’s actually hilarious to me the criticism of the Ref by Reds supporters. In particular their support of disgraceful refereeing by Red Berry in Super Rugby AU Final. Now you know what it feels like to be on the end of a dud Ref.

Rubbish. His movement was exactly the same as it would be to ground it. His palm lands on the ground open. At pace he made contact a fraction of a second early.

The Reds are missing Murphy and Berry badly.

There appears be an 'unconscious bias' from refs. The Kiwi refs allow a lot more lying around the ruck area, and side entry at the tackle IMO. Seems this is also the way they referee during the Kiwi only comp, so it is now their 'norm'. Issue for Oz sides then in contending with this, as well as the player dominance of the Kiwis.

>I don’t see anything in this headline which suggests that it’s claiming that these decisions cost the Reds the game Well, given that a bad decision which flouted the Laws of Rugby cost the Hurricanes a win in Canberra, the decisions in this clickbait piece would need to exceed that standard of awfulness for the headline to be meaningful. But they don't, so it isn't.

It wasn't a "supposed" knock on. It was a knock on. Yes it was a technically incorrect process. But if that hadn't happened the worst (and most impactful) decision of the year would have been the ref and touchie missing it in the first place.

this referee is a disgrace to the prestige New Zealand rugby. Ofcourse Reds would have lost at the end. But this referee turned a Red card to a yellow, and gave two yellows for no reason .. What a pathetic joker he is ? Seriously, if you love New Zealand rugby and the game , please retire ?

Im not real happy with the YC for a player being offside like they ruled as I thought he was fine. Maybe a penalty at most. I didnt like the Pen try bit but felt the deliberate knock-out was a fair ruling on what happened. Not so sure a Canes player would have scored if 10 hadnt been there tho. BUT.....I did feel the ref was against the Reds all game with 2 penalty advantages going for a lot shorter ( 25M )than we have been seeing. I dont mind it but its not the way they have ruled all year...

With the continuous click bait videos, I am pretty sure they fully endorse this unfortunately, JD... Question is, with an average of about 4 comments per click bait video, what is the motivation to bombard us with this cringe? I guess the curiosity of us roarers to see how cringe the click bait is, justifies enough clicks to please the advertiser money...

I agree, Hegarty clearly slapped the ball away and made no genuine attempt to control it - penalty and YC. The penalty try was debatable as the Canes player would have struggled to ground it regardless. The first YC was harsh, a penalty at worst.

Nothing like being held to account. Some people have been triggered…… Have to wait and see in the 2nd test against France if the same ref blows more howlers against the WBs.

I guess the road doesn’t do mistakes which cost NZ sides. Only ones to trigger an aggrieved Australian audience. Which is understandable as this is an Australian site - however, there is a lot of non-Australians on here who might like a bias list of videos.

Yep..agree on both. Hardly the worst 2 decisions of the year. The headline is probably by the same Roar editor who couldnt spellcheck the team lists 2 weeks ago when around half a dozen were completely butchered...
