The one player each AFL club should poach

By Doran Smith / Roar Guru

If you could choose one player from any other team the AFL for season 2020, who would it be?

Bearing in mind only one player from each of the 18 clubs can be used in this hypothetical exercise.

No one’s perfect. There isn’t a club in the AFL that doesn’t have a flaw.

The Adelaide Crows need a forward pocket that has the capability to kick goals. Jordan de Goey from the Collingwood Magpies would be the perfect solution to the Crows.

The Brisbane Lions require a centre halfback and Jeremy McGovern from the West Coast Eagles is the best in the business. McGovern would be perfect to strengthen the Brisbane Lions’ defence.

The Carlton Blues are in need of a quality ruckman and Scott Lycett from the Port Adelaide Power is that player. They can’t rely on Levi Casboult shouldering all of the ruck work.

The Collingwood Magpies need a key forward and Eric Hipwood of the Brisbane Lions is that player missing from the jigsaw puzzle that is the Magpies’ best 22.

The Essendon Bombers would benefit from another tall forward as it appears that Joe Daniher will be unavailable for a while. If Tim Membrey of the St Kilda Saints averaged two goals per game in the 2019 season, then what could he do playing for a team that finished in the top eight in 2019 in the Bombers.

The Fremantle Dockers are lacking a match-winner. Nat Fyfe and Michael Walters need help and they could also do with a big name. That is Dustin Martin of the Richmond Tigers. Martin could play predominantly up forward and occasionally help Fyfe out in the midfield.

The Geelong Cats need a player in the prime of their career and a midfielder. Marcus Bontempelli from the Western Bulldogs will be the perfect fit. Bontempelli would bring leadership along with being a quality player. He would be an ideal recruit for the Cats.

The Gold Coast Suns have Brandon Ellis playing on the wing, but they need a quality player to play on the other wing. Mitch Duncan is the player that the Suns need as he is one of the Geelong Cats’ most important players.

The Greater Western Sydney Giants are in need of a fullback and Robbie Tarrant of the North Melbourne Kangaroos would be a player that could play that role.

The Hawthorn Hawks are in need of a fullback and Daniel Talia of the Adelaide Crows would help boost the Hawks’ defence and be an important part of their back six.

The Melbourne Demons need a player that can kick goals and more specifically a forward pocket and Tom Papley of the Sydney Swans is that player.

The North Melbourne Kangaroos need a player that’s an attacking defender and that player is James Sicily from Hawthorn.

The Port Adelaide Power could use someone that provides run out of defence and Michael Hibberd of the Melbourne Demons could play that role very effectively.

The Richmond Tigers need someone who can play on the wing as well as the capability to play on the halfback flank and that player is Lachie Whitifield from the Greater Western Sydney Giants.

The St Kilda Saints could use a fullback and a player that would help their back six look more formidable. The ideal player to play that role is Michael Hurley from the Essendon Bombers.

Sports opinion delivered daily

The Sydney Swans need a ruckman and the perfect player for them to recruit would be Jarrod Witts of the Gold Coast Suns.

The West Coast Eagles need someone on the half forward flank and that player is Michael Walters from the Fremantle Dockers. Walters was selected on the half forward flank in the 2019 AFL All Australian team.

The Western Bulldogs require a mid-sized defender who is a leader and capable of creating run out of defence. The type of player they need to fill that flaw is Sam Docherty of the Carlton Blues.

Why would Brisbane go after McGovern when they have Harris Andrews? Brisbane need a dominant key forward. Maybe Hipwood is that player and I definitely think he has potential. I see no reason why the Lions would trade him given that they have put so much work developing him through the academy, and remember, quality homegrown players are hard to find in Queensland. If you find one, it is worth hanging onto them. What I would like is another key forward to support Hipwood. Dan McStay and Oscar McInerney have their moments but, to win a Premiership, I feel the Lions need a stronger forward line. People forget that Alastair Lynch and Jonathan Brown played together. During their Premiership dynasty, the Lions' forward line featured an experienced forward (Lynch) and an emergenging one (Brown). So I really think the Lions need to go after an experienced forward. Jeremy Cameron would be ideal, Tom Hawkins maybe or Joe Danniher could be an option. But, thinking realistically, I would like to see the Lions go after Adelaide's Tom Lynch. I think a trade with the Crows could suit both clubs. Adelaide are rebuilding and need to move on some senior players, while the Lions are in the Premiership window and need to recruit experience.

If I could take anyone I'd have Charlie Cameron. 55 goal forward pockets are so rare and we'd be able to rotate him, Rozee and Gray through the middle. Phwaaaw. That would be awesome.

I’d probably go for Jeremy Cameron or Jack Darling, both more agile and cover more ground than Tom Lynch. Ben Brown maybe ahead of Lynch too.

TDK has injured his ankle at practice. Won’t be available for round 2.

Good pick for North, an elite intercepting defender is definitely what we need. McGovern also comes to mind but Sicily has more footy ahead of him.

It’s not as though there’s any hope of getting Patrick soon, and Jamie is a great player. So yes, he’s consolation. Patrick is a WA boy... who knows, in a few years maybe, he could eventually end up at WCE. Here’s hoping.

Haha, Jamie Cripps is consolation for Patrick Cripps...

True. I wouldn't play him on the wing; was thinking more along the lines of his traditional medium forward role. We have Dickson (who's about had it) and Bailey Dale (who's had 3 good games in his career) who fill that role; Stringer would be a very handy addition.

Saad would be a good replacement for Jetta

Jake stringer lacks the tank to be an effective wingman he needs to work on that.

McGovern combined with Andrews would make Brisbane impenetrable. Nightmarish really. If West Coast could have anyone, would like to choose from (Besides Walters): - Connor Rozee - Nicky Blakey - Patrick Cripps (though his cousin Jamie is consolation enough) - Saad... though not sure where we’d fit him with Gaff still around - Ben Brown - Jeremy Cameron - Jade Gresham - Darcy Fogarty... looks threatening in forward line if he develops well. Has height and size. If it came down to it, Rozee is my pick.

If I could pick anyone for the Lions, I actually think McGovern would be the perfect player. But as Jorge of Brisvegas has said further above- the chances of West Coast letting him go would be zero. As for ruckmen - surely if this is you can take anyone- Grundy would be 1st ruckmen any club would want.

Yeah but he's a violent scumbag. Harris Andrews might not remember much of the incident but plenty of Lions fans do. Would not want him anywhere near the club.

Especially as they aren't "relying on Casboult to shoulder all the work" - Pittonet will come in and TDK will get plenty of opportunity this year I would imagine.

I think Carlton would grab Tom Papley before a ruckman. If they could grab a ruckman it would be Grundy.
