The first week of the AFL trade period is coming to a close today. Join The Roar for live trade news and updates from the day, starting from 9am AEDT.

Though we only saw a small number of deals done yesterday, there were some big pieces of news to come out of it which will set the scene for a dramatic finish to the trade period.

Firstly, Grant Birchall move to Brisbane as an unrestricted free agent. He will be the last free agent through the door, as the window closed yesterday.

The means players like Sam Jacobs and Jack Newnes, who might have moved through free agency, will now need to find another way to get to new clubs.

Jacobs is likely to be traded to GWS, as the Giants knew that signing him as a free agent could decrease the value of the compensation pick they received for losing Adam Tomlinson.

Newnes on the other hand faces an uncertain future, with rival clubs showing a lack of interest.

We also learned yesterday that, despite rumour, Essendon’s Orazio Fantasia and Adelaide’s Brad Crouch will both remain with their present clubs into 2020.

Fantasia’s news in particular was something of a surprise as most had expected him to seek a trade after picking a new South Australian manager.

However the big bombshell of Thursday came in two parts.

Firstly, it was revealed that Fremantle had demanded not just pick 6 this year but also a 2020 future first-round pick as the price to get Brad Hill to St Kilda.

Secondly, the Saints returned serve to this demand by trading out pick 6 to the GWS Giants for picks 12 and 18, passing on pick 59 to GWS as well.

A gutsy move that is certain to have massive ramifications for how the rest of the trade period pans out.

Macca. It would be nice to get them done well before the deadline but it seems the Papley deal is the main priority. I am sure SOS is wanting pick 25 back from Sydney to use on Martin. Maybe next years third pick is involved. I see that SOS and GC are looking at what happens if the Daniher, Papley trades don’t get done and how we then get Martin. Also heard we are looking at Pittonet at Hawthorn as another ruckman. Would be nice to get an early answer on Papley so we could then do some work on Butler (although he has nominated St Kilda) or Gray if Papley is off the table.

Hey Col,long trade week for Blues supporters. Everyone knows we will get Papley for pick 9, Martin for our future second rounder and Betts for not much (give or take a bit of manoeuvring) but it seems like going right down to the wire as nothing can happen until the bombers agree to trade Daniher.

Why would Carlton want to let a player go who has been regarded as a potential star? They recruited McKay and Curnow to be their long time key forwards. Casboult has probably got 2 more years if he stays at Carlton and McGovern was recruited to be our third tall forward.

Buddy is nearly cooked Col. Get the next rock star up there. You still have Mackay, Casboult, McGovern (why?) Carlton should take Robertson from Brisbane and Preuss to help protect the kids.

Generally like Dwayne Russell, but his petulant rant re Fantasia is a beacon of selfishness. During the trade period the media whinge if the players don’t play their game. The media is currently pandering to any club or manager leaking - without verifying ????

Agree, from Jono hay, Nathan Thompson, mitch Clarke, dayme beams etc, clubs have paid a premium for low return. Stevens has been a good player but his future is uncertain and Geelong shouldn't be compelled to pay high if guarantee of playing isn't there imo.

I reckon once you disclose mental health issues and miss a lot of footy, then it devalues your 'footy trade value' enormously, almost to the point of a 4th rounder. He's won four B&Fs but at a struggling club that offered little competition for that award, and now he's 28 years old and missed a year of footy due to mental illness. I'd be rapt to pick him up at my local suburban club but very dubious about his ability to produce now at the highest level. Worth a punt maybe as a 4th rounder and base salary, but still very speculative. Not the type of player profile to build your future around. That said, we all wish him well.

I like it, Dean but Graeme Wright is pretty unemotional on F/S picks

The little bloke bit off more than he could chew much like last year when he backed down and traded for Hogan (as he always was going to do).
