There’s just three days left before the AFL trade period comes to an end and still a mountain of deals to get done, guaranteeing a dramatic finish. Join The Roar for live trade news updates from 9am AEDT.

In an entire week of the trade period to date we have seen just three player trades, with Tim Kelly, Sam Frost and Ed Langdon all moving clubs last week.

Kelly joined West Coast from Geelong in exchange for a bounty of draft picks which, while they won’t immediately fill the gap he leaves behind, gives the Cats ample opportunity to add talent to their list.

Frost got to Hawthorn for the price, roughly, of a future second-round pick, while Langdon arrived at Melbourne for much the same, completing the Dees’ acquisition of a new wing pair alongside their free agency sining of Adam Tomlinson.

Other free agents to have moved clubs include Adelaide’s Cam Ellis-Yolmen, who is now at Brisbane, two-time Richmond premiership player Brand Ellis, who joined Gold Coast, and four-time flag-winner at Hawthorn Grant Birchall, on a one-year deal at the Lions.

The free agency window is now officially closed as of the end of Thursday last week, meaning Sam Jacobs will have to move to GWS via a trade rather than as a free agent.

Another Crow, Eddie Betts, is expected to get his wish of a return to Carlton sometime today, and it’s also believe that Adelaide will announce their next senior coach during the day.

Deals on the other hand for the likes of Tom Papley, Joe Daniher and Brad Hill on the other hand still seem a long way off – we may need to wait until Wednesday to find out their fate.

Fair enough – I would have thought that’s generally the case, but Adelaide had that pick swap last year when they got Carlton’s 2019 first-round pick, so I wasn’t sure whether this one was also for a more distant (i.e. 2020) draft.

Adelaide will pay "a small percentage" of his salary. It seems that Adelaide has freed up at least $400K of salary cap with the move (and probably more). They will also use the pick as part of a Father = Son nomination next year (Hart, McDermott, Welsh, Smart, Tregenza, McLeod maybe). Carlton will be paying a player who hardly plays a game but brings a good demeanor and work ethic and sells a lot of guernseys. I hope for Carlton's sake that his off field impact is what they claim it can be because if it isn't then he will be expensive! Adelaide will be playing a young kid in the forward pocket (probably Tyson Stengle) and developing him for the future. Win Win!

It's a sad indictment on the game when kicking 35 goals a year as a tall forward is some sort of achievement. He's still only worth mid-30's.

Or James Aish.

He seems like a good bloke but lacking a bit on game day, he's made a few selection mistakes in the past couple of years as well. I'll give him the chance for this year but no finals wins and he'll have to go.

Doug Wade stiff here, should have played on in 75.

Because we have built a side around him, they will match, then the choice is draft or stay.

Unfortunately I don't think Graham Wright rates him enough to use pick 11 on him. :crying:

It doesn't matter though. He is costing barely anything to trade and Adelaide will pay much of his salary. If he doesn't perform, he plays seconds. Hardly a risk, but his presence will add so much around the club.

No they wouldn't be getting ripped apart. Port gets a free run in the Adelaide press (maybe a function of all those Port fans in the print media in particular). The Wines article is a prime example - the slant is that it never happened. The Brad Crouch reports had a different slant in the media. Why would that be?

Port are lucky Adelaide is such a basket case at the moment. The media would be ripping them to shreds otherwise.

According to Wines management (via Kane Cornes), reports earlier today of them contacting Carlton about a potential trade were 'completely untrue'. “These reports are completely untrue, Ollie is very happy at Port Adelaide, where he is captain and contracted for another three seasons. “He certainly did not ask me to investigate the possibility of a trade and nor did I scope one out on his behalf.”

I agree, but I think that will mean that he has gone 2 years too long (instead of 1).

Can't argue with that logic.

Let’s see Pedro. I think his performance next year will not compare to this year.

Macca

In his last season with the blues back in 2013 he kicked 11 in his last 8 games. He plays poorly when he isn't happy. Also assuming Papley, Martin, McGovern, Mckay and Curnow are the other starting forwards Betts slips a couple of spots back in the defender ranks.
