The Brisbane Lions are on top of the ladder after a thrilling one-point win over Geelong. Charlie Cameron kicked five goals.
Final score
Brisbane Lions 10.15 (75)
Geelong Cats 10.14 (74)
A mammoth clash comes to the Gabba, as the second-placed Brisbane Lions host the first-placed Geelong Cats on a Saturday afternoon. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 2:10pm AEST.
When this clash was scheduled, last October, I’m not sure many footy pundits – if any – would have expected this game to future first versus second, with the minor premiership still very much up in the air. So, this is nothing short of a massive clash – perhaps the biggest the Gabba has hosted in a fair few years.
Brisbane has surpassed most expectations and then some, gunning for the minor premiership after eight straight wins and a fair few years in the wilderness.
Chris Fagan’s men’s last outing – a relatively easy win over Queensland counterparts Gold Coast – was a welcome clash ahead of today’s game, and next week’s difficult assignment against Richmond in Melbourne.
Brisbane’s only other hit out against a current top four team was Round 1’s surprise win over West Coast, so they don’t have a lot of history on that front.
Geelong’s season started superbly, but since the bye their form has been extremely patchy. They’ve failed to string together consecutive wins since the break, meaning their minor premiership credentials are still in the air, and this becomes an important game for them to win – winning here will reaffirm why they’re premiership contenders, much the same way it will for the Lions if they salute victory.
Teamswise, the Lions have made no changes after last week’s win, but have two players in Alex Witherden and Lincoln McCarthy playing their 50th games.
Geelong, for their part, have made one change – Sam Menegola has been omitted, with Mark O’Connor returning to the side. They also have a player reaching a half century in games played – Brandon Parfitt.
Prediction
I’ll be tipping the Lions to win this one. They’ve had a remarkably consistent few months, and with what’ll likely be a roaring Gabba behind them, it’s possible they’ll put on a show. This will hardly be a blow out, with Geelong sure to prove a strong competitor, but the Lions will conquer an eight game losing streak to the Cats.

Seriously people Brisbane are on top one game out of finals. Did Brisbane choose a genius in Fagan while the Blues drew the short straw with Bolton?

Epic win. Great last 15 minutes which is all I saw. What a great crowd! So pleased for the team and coach. Pretty rare to see a Queensland team on top of the AFL ladder.

6 of the last 7 scores. Every time they showed the cats coach in the last qtr he looked like he had just woken up and lost for ideas on where he was

Could have been in front a lot earlier. How many of those inside 50’s were straight to a lions player or over the boundary line just inside the 50.

Well, I guess I best start taking the Lions as real premiership contenders

Excellent result, congrats Lions.

No it’s the coach. He likes to hold teams rather than finish them off.

You have no credibility. What a silly silly comment.

Thrilling finish and what a catch by McCarthy on that mark. Geelong appeared to run out of energy in the final 10-15 minutes. Prior to that they were outplaying Brisbane I thought and looked headed to a win. I think both teams take away many positives from this game, but Geelong may need to improve their fitness.

Took to the last 10 minutes, Cats were 13 to 3 inside 50's, then the Lions picked up the pace and had the Cats scrambling.

A very strategic game. So strategic it was quite monotonous. Lions show some real maturity and a bit of sparkle to get over the line.

They will probably get West Coast at the Gabba in the first week. Probably the best match up that Brisbane could have asked for. West Coast will still have some bad memories about that round 1 beat down.

Hot damn you Lions!!! Such an exciting team to watch too.

So, Brisbane leap over the Cats to get themselves into first position. Geelong - who led at every change - will be frustrated to lose their lead in that one, and lose their former top spot on the ladder. Dangerfield was monstrous, Kelly was prolific and Miers continued his prodigiously talented year, but the Lions - especially last-gasp winner McCarthy and a four goal Charlie Cameron - have secured a superb win in front of bloody happy home fans. Thank you for joining me this afternoon. I'll be back for North v Port in a couple of hours time. Brisbane: 10.15 (75) Geelong: 10.14 (74)
