Friday night NRL continues with the Brisbane Broncos hosting the South Sydney Rabbitohs from Suncorp Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 8:05pm AEDT.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs are looking to go one better this year while much better is expected from the Brisbane Broncos, at least north of the border.

That expected improvement was due to to the signing of Adam Reynolds, but fans will be left to wait for at least another week.

COVID has ravaged the Broncos with Reynolds, Kobe Hetherington, Tyson Gamble and Cory Paix all out with the illness.

However, as well as Reynolds, they have recruited well. Billy Walters, Kurt Capewell, Ryan James and Tyrone Roberts all make their club debuts for the Broncos. Keenan Palasia starts at prop with Thomas Flegler suspended.

Fans will be happy to see a fully fit Kotoni Staggs run out. If Staggs has a big game, the Broncos are a chance.

The Rabbitohs are about to begin a new era after the departure of Wayne Bennett and Adam Reynolds. New coach Jason Demetriou has a big job ahead of him, but will be relying on the likes of Damien Cook and Cameron Murray to set a standard for his side.

Blake Taaffe comes in for the suspended Latrell Mitchell at fullback, while Lachlan Ilias gets the first shot in the seven jersey. Michael Chee Kam makes his club debut from the bench.

Prediction
The Brisbane Broncos looked good in patches last year but silly mistakes continued to bite them.

Adam Reynolds goes some way to address this but the young Broncos side must find a way themselves.

I give the Broncos a rough chance at home but the Rabbitohs should have too much class in the end, with Cody Walker set to take on a bigger role this season.

South Sydney Rabbitohs by 12.

Seen a few glimpses of a decent combo between Walters and Capewell beginning to form as well starting from that first trial against the Titans, those two combined to lay on the Oates try last night

Agreed. I thought Walters and Kelly both played well Walters took the ball to the line well… I thought he was running himself and stepping back in a little too often but he was also pretty selective about when he went wider. He threw a nice pass for Coates’ try

Very pleasing to see Albert Kelly step up in the absence of Reynolds, he kicked well, was solid in defence, threw a beauty of a pass for Cobbo's disallowed try and looks like he's cut out some of the errors from his game. After an off-season of no one being able to put a stamp on being the one to partner Reynolds in the halves both Kelly and Walters put their hands up tonight to give Kevvie something to think about for next week

What a game, let's see if anyone can top my highlight of the week so far... Capewell's field goal. Brilliant stuff.

The difference being, each with a new number #7 by their side, Luai turned to rock, while Walker turned to dust.

How does the Bunker not pull up the Kelly interception? He never at any stage made it back 10m with the official. It’s borderline professional foul territory.

Although two in a row to start 2020, shortened by 4 weeks and still easily took the spoon.

Best comment of the night at the ground… “Both teams missed Adam Reynolds” That just about sums up the quality of the game. Hard to watch but well done to Kevin Walters and the entire Broncos outfit. Broncos played what was in front of them whereas Souths played boring formulaic rugby league. If that is what is being coached, they are stuffed for 2022. Some very “big names” brought their B grade attitude to Suncorp tonight. Not much intent and no cohesive plan B. Reminded me of Souths in 1970s after they lost their stars to Manly. A big look in the mirror session is warranted this week. Attitude adjustment needed. At full time I said ok, that’s reserve grade what time does first grade start?

Workmates hassling me cause I wasn’t rating manly and south’s this year on the ladder. Manly a one trick pony who’s tricks didn’t work on the teams above them last year. South and all their losses. They thought I shouldn’t count that stuff. Lol. It is early days I guess.

I enjoyed the game but the quality was average. Well done Broncos. Souths looked rudderless.

Let’s see next game, don’t count your Broncos before they bolt, that will be the best the Broncs will do this year as we haven’t even started, the Bunnies always lose R1, don’t get too excited

I would say there are three things we learnt about Souths. The difference between Alex Johnston on the wing and at fullback is so great that you're better off putting Tom Burgess there. Josh Mansour is not a first grader. Jaxson Paulo might be, but isn't yet. I'd say that's what we learnt but, really, we knew that beforehand anyway.

Pretty scrappy game but a well deserved win by the Broncos… they’d have found several ways to lose that over the last couple of seasons. Still think everyone was a coupe of yards offside down the blind on the Kelly intercept and try Haas was huge, well supported by Carrigan and most of the forwards. Staggs and Cobbo looked a bit clunky but if things click down that side, they could be lethal Souths forwards looked a bit flat, apart from Arrow and Murray. They’ve got a bit of work to do. Walker was playing without Reynolds inside him, no Latrell outside and no Gagai and Johnson down the left… understandable that things would look a bit clunky. They’ll improve massively Great work from Capewell at the end…

Both teams were terrible. Souths were just way worse. Only Walker brings anything in attack for them,Latrell can't comeback quick Cook is past it,and sadly the young number 7 isn't a first grader yet. South's need to buy an experienced 7 now on the cheap eg: Ash Taylor. Lucky for South's it is only round 1. But not a great start. Will the Bennett curse cont.. ?
