Nat Fyfe wins second Brownlow Medal

By Josh / Expert

Fremantle Dockers captain Nat Fyfe has picked up the second Brownlow Medal of his career at the 2019 Brownlow count.

The 28-year-old had the medal iced with two rounds to go, winning with a total of six votes to beat Patrick Dangerfield in second on 27.

Patrick Cripps and Lachie Neale came in tied for third with 26 votes apiece, while Dangerfield’s teammate Tim Kelly finished fifth with 24.

The result makes Fyfe just the fifteenth player in the history of the VFL/AFL to win multiple Brownlow Medals, and with a few more good years left in him yet could give him a shot at becoming only the fifth to win three.

He is also one of only two players in the history of the competition to average at least one vote per game played, joining Fitzroy’s legendary three-time winner Haydn Bunton senior.

Fyfe’s 33 votes will take him to a career total of 174, which puts him inside the top 20 for all-time votes, territory that 2017 medallist Dustin Martin also moved into tonight.

Patrick Dangerfield’s 27 votes saw him shoot to a career tally of 209 and into the all-time top ten, where he is now sixth overall and just one vote behind Chris Judd.

Scott Pendlebury also moved into the all-time top ten tonight and will be ninth overall, overtaking Dane Swan as Collingwood’s all-time leading votegetter.

Pendlebury, along with Leigh Matthews, Joel Selwood and Brent Harvey, is one of four players in the all-time top ten to have never won the medal.

Gary Ablett with 13 votes became the first player in the history of the game to move past the 250 career votes milestone, and in fact finished the night with a career tally of 261.

Whether he continues to add more to that next year, or perhaps has played his last AFL game, is something we’ll find out in the coming weeks.

Brad Hill was let go by hawthorn back in the day without much fuss because he makes some serious errors under pressure which undermines a ton of that good work you mentioned. On Walters... honestly, there's no forward in a ross Lyon team that I would ever call good. I'll wait and see how he goes under a coach that understands scores of 52 are not good to win most matches.

No my comment is based off a couple of former Fremantle players opinions on Fyfe and Neale... Neale apparently not a particularly good bloke and not much of a team man... good luck to him up at Brisbane, honestly couldn't care less, he went for the money and that's fine in this industry, it's the way it's going anyway. Brad Hill will be a bigger loss than Neale, a far more damaging player, pity he can't just dump his Victorian missus and find a nice West Aussie one.

Mate I'm a Freo fan but also one of there harshest critics. I know we have an average list but the players I've mentioned are far better than average. Walters is the second best small forward in the comp (behind Cameron), Brad Hill averages more metres gained than anyone else in the league which is why it'll be such a blow to lose him, Alex Pearce would have been the AA Centre Half back had he not broken his ankle and Hamling and Ryan are far better than average defenders. All these guys make any side in the league. Freos problem is that under this elite 7 or 8 players the talent does drop off sharpish and apart from Walters there isn't a lot in the front half. All these guys are far better than average footballers, watch a few more Freo games and you would know....

He doesn't have a bun, hasn't for the entire year. You rarely watch Freo don't you

Johno Brown and Lynch went alright, but a decent mid sticking it down their throat makes life easier. You can't win a game if the ball never gets into your forward line

Mate.... Look at the facts. If they were all as good as you and others say, Freo wouldn't have finished bottom 10 this year. They just simply aren't.

I backed your point all the way on the midfielders and the Brownlow voting system, but you really have lost it, quote Mundy on his day. Gee wiz this bloke is a brilliant footballer of over 300 games and is Mr consistent you either have not watched him play or your just plain ignorant. Also you call Walters average AA this year. Brad Hill played in the strong Hawthorn Premiership side. Very average call Spruce !

Yep I do agree with you on that front. For mine Brodie Grundy is the most valuable player in the league, but I'd have Fyfe second. Midfielders definitely do get the lions share of votes. I do think there needs to be a separate award for backs and for ruckmen, the forwards have the Coleman, the mids have the brownlow, AFL MVP etc. Spud had the right idea with the golden fist award, make it happen AFL!

Walters average? Mundy average? B Hill average? Brayshaw average? Alex Pearce average? Hamling average? Luke Ryan average? Ok yes the list lacks depth but they are 7 players who would walk into any side in the comp and get games, they are far better than average footballers.

McGovern is quality, Rance is just a little better. More agile. Btw, to answer another question... Geelong in 08 had ablett, Corey, selwood and Bartel in the midfield. Hawthorn had Franklin and roughy kick 200 goals for the season. Guess who won the premiership that year?

Those midfielders weren't scoring the goals, or defending them from being scored buddy.

Would be a good match up .fyfe given time as a forward would pants Rance. Rance as a ruck rover could be a bit slow. Fyfe also would make a exceptional run off backman , dockers should actually try that out. Surprised you didn’t mention McGovern as he is afar better backman than rance

Once you edit something it shrinks. It’s a problem with the editor I’m guessing. For instance, this sentence will no longer have a space after editing.

True, continue playing players whose productivity had declined was the major downfall of Lyon,

Most umpires struggle to do their job. After the game they sit down look at stats which usually indicates the midfielders rank the highest so that's how it pretty much works so they think there the best.

Well, Pav was cruelly denied any chance to win one because apparently, according to Parkside Darren he wasn't good enough to play in the midfield. Pav was just another also-ran according to his interpretations.

the club best and fairests are better indicators of quality than the Brownlow. They often move beyond midfielders, and key position players are valued by their team mates more highly than the stats hungry umpires and media. I'd radically change the brownlow so as the only eligible people each year are the 18 club best and fairest winners and then the winner is picked from that list by a panel of judges (i.e one from the media, an umpire, a coach, a player, an AFL administrator) in a 3-2-1 system. It's just so midfield oriented at the moment. Thankfully the norm smith medal hasn't followed suit.
