Two thousand fans will be allowed to attend this Saturday night’s Showdown between Port Adelaide and Adelaide at the Adelaide Oval.
Is this fair for the other AFL clubs that won’t play in front of crowds?
There will be no crowds attending any other Round 2 AFL matches.
It will be most likely that fans attending this Round 2 clash at the Adelaide Oval will need to be social distancing at all times, but how is this possible at the lines to get into the stadiums, the lines for the bathrooms and the lines for food and beverages?
How is this safe?
One positive aspect of this news is that broadcasters will now be able to commentate this Port Adelaide versus Adelaide match at the Adelaide Oval with some real fan noise, not fake, canned crowd noise as what was previously planned for the Round 2 AFL matches.
It will be very interesting to see which Port Adelaide and Adelaide fans will be able to attend this match. Surely the cheer squad get priority rather than a ballot system?
The cheer squad members are the heart and soul of a footy club. They put in so much of their own time to contribute and support the club that they love so much. Therefore it would be fitting that they get access to the match in Adelaide this weekend.
The other interesting question if the cheer squads attend is will we see the return to banners when the teams run out on the hallowed turf at the Adelaide Oval?
It will be great too see a return of 2000 fans on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval for the showdown between Port Adelaide and Adelaide. It will be fantastic to see a return to live crowds in the AFL matches this weekend.
It will be great to hopefully hear the mighty roar when a player takes a great mark or kicks the match-winning goal.
This is a step in the right direction for allowing these lucky 2000 fans to attend this weekend’s match at the 48th Showdown at the Adelaide Oval between Port Adelaide and Adelaide.
The question is when will the other states follow South Australia’s lead in a return to crowds for other AFL matches in other states?
Only time will tell.

This brings back memories. I loved watching the mighty pear when I was a kid.

It’s not unfair at all, after the protests last weekend there should be at least 10,000 people allowed into decent sized stadiums, perhaps 5,000 at the Gold Coast, which wouldn’t matter because nobody goes there anyway

It is only unfair if yr playing the Giants or Suns there used to playing in front of two thousand people.

There would be bigger crowds at most of the Marsh preseason games, and with the smaller grounds they're played at they'd probably have a better atmosphere, too.

Nope, fans are better than no fans regardless on the number.

That would be brilliant. Also would avoid paying $10 for lukewarm mid strength. Would never happen though...

It's a WAFL crowd so no it's not unfair, until stadiums can fill to halfway plus it's not anything worth thinking about.

2000 peeps in a stadium 4% full isn't a crowd.

I've seen neither club Adelaide or the mighty pear whinge about other clubs playing in front of Crowds. When did that happen?

It would be nice if we could temporarily go back to the good old days and be allowed to bring in a few tins of our own, so as to not risk lining up at the bar.

I can't see the crowd of that sizer playing any part, I do find it funny that last weekend it was Port whinging about it being unfair NSW and Qld teams might be able to have a crowd and now they have one of their own while other teams don't and everything is fine.

Playing in front of a few thousand fans will be dull anyway. The atmosphere comes from the big crowds. Good luck to them, it won't be the cheersquad's there. It will be the 'premium' tier members that will likely get first bite at the tickets. The "true fans" aren't segregated on financial standing, they are the ones that turn up Round 20, when its pouring rain and no hope of winning, but still go anyway to support their team. If that's the exec earning 200k a year, or the old lady that skipped buying a bingo ticket so she could go to the game. Not necessarily the ones that can afford the elite tiers of membership.

Good luck to them, looking forward to watching it. Wish they were allowed at the G. But of course there's only about 70,000 outdoor seats available there and we cant risk that - even one person per bay would be a massive risk (even though we can have 20 persons per area at the local pub and up to 50 in less than two weeks).

Its 2000 fans - 1475 Port members and 475 Adelaide members and 50 Adelaide Oval members. On top of that I think there's another 400 corporates.

No baners allowed at Showdown - I guess because the Cheer Squad holding them will be too close to the players.

I heard the outdoors seating was preferable (probably due to the oxygen levels). Maybe they could sit in the hyperbaric chambers. Apparently there's not too much of a chance of catching it in the great outdoors.

crowds allowed at sydney v gws also

My understanding was that it was corporate boxes only - basically treating the ground the same as a restaurant or pub, and allowing small groups in certain spaces. Something like 20 people per box I think I read? Just cool your jets and calm down a few weeks. Everyone will be allowed back in shortly.

Unfair? No. Would love to be there.

No. They should bring back crowds whenever and wherever they can.
