Newcastle United eased their relegation fears with a 2-0 home win over Fulham on today as attention focused on the bottom of the Premier League.

Mark Viduka’s early shot and a late Michael Owen goal clinched a first league victory for Newcastle since Kevin Keegan returned as manager in January.

Sunderland, who began the day fourth from bottom, won 1-0 at Aston Villa while Reading beat fellow strugglers Birmingham City 2-1 to climb away from danger.

Third from bottom Bolton Wanderers ended a run of five defeats after a 0-0 home draw with Manchester City while Middlesbrough overcame doomed Derby County 1-0.

Blackburn Rovers beat Wigan Athletic 3-1 despite playing most of the game with 10 men.

In an early kickoff, Portsmouth’s hopes of securing a top-six finish were dented by a 2-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.

On Sunday, leaders Manchester United host fourth-placed Liverpool while Arsenal, in second, travel to third-placed Chelsea.

Everton, in fifth, entertain West Ham United later today.
