New Zealand Maori preserved their unbeaten record in the Pacific Nations Cup rugby tournament in Hamilton today with a 17-6 victory over Manu Samoa 17-6 at Waikato Stadium.

Flyhalf Callum Bruce scored 12 points from two tries and kicked two conversions and a penalty.

The Maori led 17-0 at halftime but were held scoreless in the second half by Samoa, who played with pluck and determination, though they lost players to the sin bin in each half.

Bruce provided the Maoris’ first points from a penalty in the 11th minute, then scored the opening try from a skillful kick and chase in the 27th minute. His conversion gave the New Zealanders a 10-0 lead.

Former All Blacks halfback Piri Weepu scored the Maoris’ second try two minutes before halftime, taking an infield pass from No.8 Thomas Waldrom to finish a sharp counter attack. Bruce again converted.

Samoa lifted their defensive effort in the second half but were equally contained by strong Maori defence, managing only two penalties to fullback Gavin Williams, son of former All Blacks winger Bryan Williams.
