The Queensland rugby league is expected to confirm Mal Meninga’s re-appointment as their State of Origin coach for an unprecedented three-year term next month.

Meninga, who completed a record-equalling three successive series wins over New South Wales last month, has submitted a list of requests to the QRL which they are expected to endorse at board level next month.

“There’s a board meeting on September 12 and I’m pretty confident it will get through,” said Meninga, keen to steer his Queenslanders to a history-making fourth series next year.

Meninga has asked for a three-year contract which has never been offered before.

State selector Gene Miles believes his former Queensland teammate has earned the right to an extended term at the helm of the Maroons.

“From my point of view they’d be crazy not to give him what he wants,” Miles told Channel 10.

“He’s got a winning formula and a very good team around him.”

Queensland turned to Meninga to rekindle the Maroons pride after NSW gained the ascendency with wins in 2003-05.

With a host of former Origin greats on his coaching staff and emerging stars like Israel Folau, Greg Inglis, Karmichael Hunt and Johnathan Thurston, Meninga reclaimed Origin supremacy for Queensland with three series’ wins.
