The sons of two Test cricket greats have arrived in Hobart with the Australian Under-19 team to play India.

Mitchell Marsh, 17, son of West Australian opener Geoff, has abandoned a promising Aussie Rules career to concentrate on cricket.

Meanwhile, Alister McDermott, 17, son of paceman Craig, hopes to follow in his father’s bowling footsteps.

Marsh the all-rounder has played two domestic one-day games for WA as well as kick plenty of goals at centre-half-forward for his Fremantle footy team.

Too young for the AFL draft this season, Marsh played football for Western Australia in the national under-18 championships.

But his two one-day games for WA this year sealed the cricket deal, he said.

“This year the decision was made by itself and I’ll be spending a fair bit of time at the cricket academy over the winter … I’ve had to give up footy,” Marsh told reporters at Bellerive Oval.

McDermott, the Gold Coast quick, has played four Twenty20 matches for Queensland.

His famous father watches his games and is a great support, he said.

“He always says what I’ve done well and what I haven’t and how I can improve,” McDermott told reporters a joint news conference with Marsh.

“He gives me good advice and he’s got the experience so you’ve got to listen.”

The Under-19 series against India starts in Hobart on Tuesday before moving to Perth.
