Brett Finch quits Eels

Parramatta chief executive Denis Fitzgerald has confirmed the NRL club will release halfback Brett Finch, saying Finch was unhappy coach Daniel Anderson couldn’t guarantee him a first grade position.

Fitzgerald will meet Finch’s manager Steve Gillis on Wednesday afternoon to finalise the terms of the release.

Finch was contracted to the Eels for the rest of this year as well as 2010 and 2011.

Fitzgerald said the release would go ahead subject to further negotiations, including a financial settlement.

“We’ve heard rumours but it is with a Super League club and that would be the best situation as far as we’re concerned rather than another NRL club,” Fitzgerald said.

“As far as I’m aware he was unhappy with the situation.

“Coach Daniel Anderson had spoken with him about his performance last weekend and Daniel indicated that he hasn’t got a guaranteed spot in first grade.

“Brett was looking for something more secure than that.”

The Daily Telegraph is reporting that Finch believes he was almost shoved out the door by Anderson.

“Daniel has mentioned to me a few times that he thought I may not be the right person to take the club forward in the halfback position,” Finch told The Daily Telegraph.

“He suggested I look at England. It’s important for everyone to understand this was the club’s agenda and not mine and, after much thought, it made sense for both parties that we try and sort something out and move on.

“My manager approached the club yesterday afternoon to discuss the issue and here we are now.
