Fury take aim at Muscat

Not content with securing arguably the A-League’s biggest coup, newcomers North Queensland Fury admit they have former Socceroo Kevin Muscat in their sights.

While already boasting the impressive signature of Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler, the Fury will join the queue expected to line up for Muscat when he comes off contract with defending champions the Melbourne Victory in June.

Melbourne are reportedly in “very serious negotiations” in a bid to re-sign the Victory captain and assistant coach but the Fury don’t want to die wondering with two senior squad vacancies still remaining.

“He is one that would definitely be on my wanted list,” Fury coach Ian Ferguson told Townsville reporters.

But the Fury expect up to four clubs to be vying for the 35-year-old’s signature.

Meanwhile, the Fury are piecing together their pre-season program with diverse stops ranging from regional centres Rockhampton and Mackay to Perth and Sydney as well as south-east Asia.

However, a proposed June 20 clash against Gold Coast United at Cairns has hit a snag with the Fury and Cairns Regional Council initially unable to agree on cost-sharing arrangements.

The match between the A-League’s newcomers is expected to boast Fowler, Socceroos star Jason Culina and Cairns native Michael Thwaite.

Townsville will host the match if an agreement can’t be reached in Cairns.

North Queensland have confirmed they will take on the Brisbane roar at Townsville on July 26 and are still hoping to lock in a two-game trip to Asia in June.
