St Kilda coach Ross Lyon admits star forward Nick Riewoldt might be too courageous for his own good, and is wary of his forwards hurting each other in AFL games.
Twice Riewoldt charged back with the flight of the ball in Sunday’s win over Geelong at Etihad Stadium, once for a mark and resultant goal, but on the second occasion he just avoided being wiped out and was left with a jarred knee.
Riewoldt has produced another great season and was one of St Kilda’s best players against the Cats, but Lyon admitted his captain’s bravery occasionally bordered on the crazy.
“The first one was fine running back … that (second) one was a bit straight on for mine and a bit reckless,” he said on Monday night.
“We won’t take issue with that, but we’ll look to eradicate that.”
Lyon said St Kilda were constantly trying to improve in attack, and have big forwards like Riewoldt and Justin Koschitzke avoid colliding into each other.
“We’ve eradicated a lot of that out of our forward play,” he told Network Ten’s One HD station.
“The view was we were clunky and they used to collide a lot, Koschitzke and when (former Saint) Fraser (Gehrig) was there.
“It was a real concern, we don’t like seeing a lot of that.
“It’s a bit how we structure up, so they should separate and not collide.”
At one point in Sunday’s game Koschitzke was flattened when he collided with Michael Gardiner, who took a strong mark and goaled.
