Langer refutes interest in Test return

Justin Langer has backed away from comments he made suggesting he was prepared to return to the Test arena.

The 105-match veteran sparked debate about his playing status on Friday after he told reporters that he “would play the third Test for Australia next week for nothing”.

He added: “There is a lot I don’t miss about it but these big series, I’d play tomorrow if I was asked.”

But 38-year-old Langer, who this week claimed Don Bradman’s record as Australia’s greatest first class runscorer, said he wasn’t interest in pulling on the baggy green again.

“I’m certainly not interested in making a Test comeback,” Langer said.

“There was a bit of a tongue in cheek conversation between myself and Marcus Trescothick in the (Somerset) change-rooms about what it would take for him to play next week with (Kevin) Pietersen injured.

“He said he wasn’t interested and the point I was making was as a kid in the backyard all you want to do is play in an Ashes Test. I mean who wouldn’t? It’s the greatest thing in the world.”

“But that was it, it was just a tongue in cheek comment.”

Langer retired from Test cricket at the end of Australia’s 5-0 series win over England in the 2006-07 Ashes series.

He felt his comments regarding a potential return had been taken out of context.

“I guess that’s how the press works over here and that’s fine, it’s an institution, but there’s definitely no chance of me making a comeback for Australia,” Langer said.
