Reds coach dealing with Cooper distraction

A “new era” in Queensland rugby has been promised by Ewen McKenzie, but the incoming Reds coach is sweating on what role Wallabies star Quade Cooper plays in it.
Queensland’s new all-red home playing strip for the 2010 Super 14 was unveiled on Wednesday.
But McKenzie had no doubt been seeing red since Cooper’s arrest for burglary on Sunday.
Cooper, 21, has been bailed to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on Friday.
“I had a discussion with him but obviously he has things coming up this week which he needs to organise,” McKenzie said of Cooper.
“It’s a difficult time for him obviously, but it’s outside of my control.
“I was not expecting him back (from leave after Wallabies duty) until January 13.
“I have seen him earlier for the wrong reasons but I can’t change that.”
Officials are expected to consider in the coming weeks whether Cooper should be stood down until the matter is finalised.
It is hardly the start McKenzie had in mind when he took over the coaching reins from Phil Mooney.
“You know in sport every week is different,” McKenzie said.
“This week has had its distractions but at the same time it is a distraction outside the squad, the squad has been very focused on their preparation.
“We have been talking about what we are going to do on the field to improve.”
Cooper had been attending the buck’s night of Reds and Wallabies team-mate Peter Hynes before the alleged weekend incident on the Gold Coast.
It was also reported that Cooper was subjected to independent blood and urine tests upon his release from the watch house.
The ARU and QRU have denied they were behind the tests.
While Cooper was a glaring absentee at the Reds function on Wednesday, Hynes officially unveiled the new playing strip but would not comment on Cooper.
However, Reds captain James Horwill said Cooper could count on his team-mates’ support.
“It’s disappointing to see the headlines out there,” Horwill said.
“But we will wait and see. It’s obviously something we can’t comment much on until after Friday.
“Of course we support Quade as a team-mate but we will wait and see what all the facts are, so until then we don’t know.”
ARU and Queensland officials met with Cooper in Brisbane on Tuesday for the first time since he was charged.
The Rugby Union Players Association has also been in contact with Cooper.
Despite the controversy, McKenzie still had bold plans for 2010.
He said the all-red strip epitomised the new direction he would be taking the rugby battlers.
“I like innovation. I like change. I don’t think it (new strip) is radical, I just think it is a way of defining a new era, a new point in time,” he said.
“You’ve got to make those statements so people understand that it is not more of the same.
“We are all about trying to do something different next year.
“This is a physical sign and hopefully people will see it also in the way we play.
“You don’t fix things overnight but we are doing things differently because we know what we have done in the past hasn’t been good enough.”

McKenzie talks the talk, ” a new era” and all that. I would love to see the Reds do better in 2010, but personally I remain sceptical about McKenzie’s abilities. He certainly didn’t go well here in Paris, but I hope my fears for the Reds will be proven groundless.

Well whats the bloke meant to say Parisien? Lets give him a chance and support him … I think Link can contribute a great deal by developing and hardening up the forwards so we are at least competitive in most of the S14 matches. A starting point has to be getting them properly fit … Houston, Holmes and a few others were disgracefully out of condition last year.
God knows what he’s going to do about Quade … guess he has to plan on not having him, if he does its a bonus. At least he has experience in this sort of stuff … lest we forget Wendell got rumbled for snorting on literally the eve of a S14 home semi in 2006 which sank the Tahs hopes that year.

He’s gone, memory or no memory. What’s he like with a cricket bat, considering the iRB will probably ban him from playing in Europe as well?
If Link could nab Halangahu, very good replacement, they’ll have a quality backline organiser again, otherwise they’re stuffed before kick-off.
As for the new Red strip, who cares so long as they perform…

I know this thread is primarily a Reds/Link/Cooper story – but how friggin’ AWFUL is that new playing strip?
Sheeesh I miss the old days of plain traditional jerseys ….

Agree, that red t-shirt is no good at all.
I am convinced its only by ditching the Reds name (the jersey and colours are maroon ffs) and moving at least some of the games back to Ballymore with at least 1 Sunday afternoon fixtures will the Queensland rugby union team regain its standing.
Cotton McKnight said | December 10th 2009 @ 9:51am | Report comment
I just had a look at. It is pretty bad. It’s like a bad soccer jersey.
Harry I agree the Qld coulor is maroon, but then their emblem is a Koala, and they don’t advertise that very much. Maybe next year they will be the Queensland Koalas in Maroon, I’d love to see that.

Historically we know that Qld’s colour is maroon. We also know that they took the moniker Reds because in professional rugby, Qld Maroons is the Qld state of origin rugby league team. Accept that the QRU had to distinguish themselves. The link between Maroon and Red is there. The new playing kit is fine.

Agreed. Very bright, and very red. And worst of all, no blue, which was a link back to Queensland’s colours in the 1890s.

it IS a new era – they have a new coach.
The Reds had 2 playmakers last year, now they could have none. If they lose Cooper, they’ll be decimated. What other backs do they have apart from Ioane and Hynes? They have 2 good half-backs but only one can play at a time.
And in the forwards – Horwill and who else? Holmes?
I hope they go OK but I can see a very tough year ahead unless McKenzie can drill the forwards into a forward pack that can gain parity and Cooper plays.
taylor bridge said | December 10th 2009 @ 10:07am | Report comment
In addition to Cooper Ioane and Hynes and Genia, they have Kingi who like Lucas is more than a halfback, Lucas, Morahan, Morgan Tirinui should be back are all Wallabies and Chambers ex Melbourne Storm. I believe Daniel Braid is back for the forwards.
anopinion said | December 12th 2009 @ 11:10am | Report comment
Without Cooper the backline could be. 9 Genia 10 Lucas 12 Turanui 13 Chambers 14 Ioane 11 Hynes 15 ?? Maybe Blair Connor although he is a better centre. Perhaps Chambers can play fullback or Ioane. Where else can Kingi play?
Forwards have recruited Tomiki who is an excellent open side. Now we have two including Braid. the rest of the forward pack is Horwill and then ?????

The reds should have a decent backline but no back up and without cooper noone to direct it….
However the forwards aren’t up to scratch and the reds only hope is that the forwards can at least hold the fort and not be decimated….then rely on the back line to come up with something…..
I think link did some very positive work with the tahs changing the culture and setting a decent platform to work from considering a board that was determined to undermine him at every stage…. pity hickey didn’t capitalise on it all….

Ben Lucas is a good flyhalf. Many would argue he should have played there last year instead of Cooper.

Geez – if you’re talking up Morahan (a rookie), Morgan Turinui and Chambers (a rugby rookie) as your stars, you’re in even worse shape than I thought.
reds fan said | December 10th 2009 @ 12:44pm | Report comment
Lucas did quite well in the game he played 10 last year. If, IF, Quade isnt playing Lucas will be the one to fill in. I expect that Kingi will be asked to cover 9 and 10 also. I think it would then be Morgan and Ioane as the centres. Hynes and Chambers on wings. Morahan as fullback perhaps. Even with Quade we still dont have a serious 15 since Mclinden retired.
In the forwards Daley and Weekes (rookie of the year) had a very good year at the set piece, Holmes will be back up. Hanson played well for North Harbour in the NPC and will share duties with Hardman. Horwill in the second row…. but his partner is uncear and a problem area. Braid, Tomeki and young Shaw will cover 7. 8 and 6 are a concern… covered by Houston, Taylor and Higginbotham.
Thats on an individual basis… as a collective they have a huge issue with their defence, especially the forwards. This will be Ewen’s major task, along with getting them fit, and improving the play of the loose forwards.
I’m not expecting our backs to see alot of ball this year. So here are the certain starters and the gaps as I see them.
1. Laurie Weekes
2. Hardman
3. Daley
4 Horwill
5 ?? – contenders for second row are van humpries, byrnes, simmons, taylor (but a bit short)
6 ?? – contenders are Higginbotham, Luafutu, taylor
7 Braid
8 ?? – contenders are houston, taylor
9 Genia
10 Lucas/Cooper
11 Hynes
12 ? – cooper/turinui/chambers/faingaa
13 Ioane
14 ? – contenders are connor/morahan/chambers
15 ? – contenders are ………………. rod davies?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
16 Hanson
17 Holmes
18 ?? – one of the loose forward/lock contenders above
19 Tomeki/Shaw
20 Kingi
21 and 22 – one of the outside back contenders above

There are some frightening options in your run down. Is there really no other option at fullback other than Davies.
reds fan said | December 10th 2009 @ 2:32pm | Report comment
WCR, the question and exclamation marks represent both black humour and the utter horror of the thought of R. Davies being the 15.
reds fan said | December 10th 2009 @ 2:35pm | Report comment
Funnily enough its not the backs that bother me. It’s the forward pack. To have such limited options at 5, 6 and 8 is not good. For this reason alone I was glad to have Ewen appointed coach. He can coach a forward pack. I’m hoping he can get Higgnbotham and Taylor to step up, and keep Houston out of KFC! That greasy chicken gives him a gut and butter fingers!
reds fan said | December 10th 2009 @ 2:40pm | Report comment
WCR. to answer your question I expect they might try Luke Morahan at 15. Hynes on one wing, Blair “the Eagle” Connor on the other.
We will really miss Charlie Fetoai who copped a very serious spinal injury during the club season and wont play until 2011.
formeropenside said | December 10th 2009 @ 2:32pm | Report comment
Of course, MMM should be in the mix for the Reds this season, but won’t be thanks to the ARU. That would help stiffen up the pack, at least for a few games until injury struck. Also special thanks for cutting the ARU contracts for Blake and Latham in 2008 (while somehow Phil Waugh escapes that fate).
The new strip is dreadful, but I understand why Link could not bear to keep a more classic look – too many bad memories for him of the Tahs getting steamrolled by the Reds in the 90′s. Why a former Tah got the job I will never know: oh yes, thats right the ARU told the QRU not to hire Connolly.

Some hope for your team, Redsfan…
I thought last year Mooney erred by dropping his most in-form forward (other than Braid), Scott Higginbotham – He was on fire in attack & was handy at the lineouts. No idea why he got dropped but the team really went backwards after that…Particularly as Housten put in shocker after shocker, he’s gotta go! Agree with you that Daley should keep his spot. He’s young, but takes after his old man & i reckon he’ll develop into a great prop for both state & country, he’s a class act. The problem is in the 2nd row. If Van Humphries is picked in the starting side, don’t expect to win. Period.
The rest of the pack is ok, Braid & Horwill are the obvious standouts, but i worry about hooker – Hardmen is too old, that’s a fact, but i understand he’s the best option (don’t get me started on Faingaa!).
Half is well covered, Genia will hopefully NOT suffer 2nd yr syndrome (i’m calling 2009 his breakout yr). The problem is at 5/8…If Cooper & Ioine are the Wallabies centre pairing (yes I know only because Barnes was out), they should be at S14 level too…So who plays 10? I agree with previous posts that Lucas should get first crack, he’s a good communicator, solid kicking/passing game & is a good defender. Hynes on one wing, but the other wing & fullback are major problems within the Reds…Did they even try to ger a marque player for next yr??? Morahan & Davies are too young for anything other than cameos and the odd start.
I’m a Tahs fan but I actually hope the Reds start to give the comp a shake…Fact is the Reds have been a bad news story for most of the 00′s..& that just gives papers like the DT more ammo in shots against RU. If we had all 4 S14 teams in the top half of the table (1-4 would be nice!!), RU would start to get the positive press & general “feel good” factor it so desperately needs…Oh, & of course all this would happen just before the next World Cup!!!
reds fan said | December 10th 2009 @ 3:28pm | Report comment
Braid is our marquee player. I think Morahans seven’s experience and time with the wallabies suggest that it’s now time for a proper Super Rugby season. So thats one wing. Or perhaps if we think Cooper will be at 12 and Ioane at 13, then Chambers could probably start at wing with Morahan at 15. Its all very inexperienced though.
formeropenside said | December 10th 2009 @ 4:02pm | Report comment
Losing Cooper is a major issue, especially given he was starting to lose the flaky tag. Throw in McLinden retiring the backline gets interesting. Given that, the best team is probably:
1. Holmes
2. Hardman
3. Weekes/Edwards
4. Horwill
5. Van Humphries/Byrnes
6. Higginbotham
7. Braid
8. Taylor
9. Genia
10. Lucas
11. Morahan
12. Turinui
13. Ioane
14. Chambers
15. Hynes
The bench is an issue, as depth gets skinny:
16. Hanson
17. Edwards/Weekes
18. Humphries/Byrnes
19. Houston (or maybe Houston at 8, Taylor at 18 and Tomiki or Shaw at 19)
20. Kingi
21. A. Faingaa
22. Davies/Connor
A lot depends on how well Van holds up in the second row at age 97: he’s the lineout general and a good jumper, but the thing about getting on a bit is injuries take longer to heal completely. With a proper scrum coach again, the scrum should hold up: again, whether Edwards is over an injury and can return to early 2008 form is important here.
I’m not sure why the Reds chased Tomiki, given Andrew Shaw looked good in a few games last season. Depth is important I suppose, but I would hate to see Shaw, a real Queenslander, go to the made-up Melbourne franchise in 2011. Schatz may also pressure for the 6 spot.
If Houston does not perform this year, it should be his last chance (and for some reason he was given a two year contract last year). There is undoubted talent, but not enough workrate and sloppy defence. Given that, his best use may be as an impact player for 20 mins off the bench.
Lucas is steady but not spectacular: that might even be a good thing. He’s a strong defender, which may be important depending on which Turinui shows up. Turinui is a good thinker on attack, but lazy in defence. Hopefully he can put Ioane into holes.
I suppose if Cooper is fit, Turinui might be a 15 option instead of Hynes. Fullback is a problem, and McLinden was looking like a really dangerous runner with a season of rugby under his belt. Davies is fast, and Connor is a fullback option, but both need a little seasoning yet.

formeropenside said | December 11th 2009 @ 7:57am | Report comment
If Holmes does not step up, Daley is the next LHP. I dont think Daley can play both sides, and you need a real THP on the bench. Perhaps Holmes can cover THP and will become the 17, with Daley starting.
But there is not a lot of role for the no.2 LHP, as a rule.
reds fan said | December 11th 2009 @ 8:11am | Report comment
I agree. But on last years showing I reckon Daley has the starting LHP position tied up. Holmes needs to turn the clock back about three or four years if he is going to pressure Daley.
Mike G said | December 11th 2009 @ 9:38am | Report comment
Ah yep, Braid is the marque player, my bad. I also forgot about Chambers signing on, he’ll probably slot onto a wing in his 1st year wouldn’t he?? Although he could end up being a great long term 15. I stand by my earlier comments about Morahan though…perhaps 2010 should be the year he gets a full season of S14 from the bench – possibly with a couple of starts. Link doesn’t want to burn out the young kids too quick..Deans made that mistake with O’Connor in the Tri’s & you could argue if cost us dearly…Anyway, all the best for a good yr & bring on rd 1 up at Suncorp!!
