Who should play for the Melbourne Rebels?

The cries of the die-hard members of the Victorian Rugby Community were answered late last year. After so long, top flight rugby was coming to Victoria. The Melbourne Rebels were resurrected.
This decision however left many hundreds of fans across Australia, and indeed the rugby world, asking “who will play, run and coach such a team?”
Fast forward. We are now just shy of February in the new year these questions are beginning to be answered.
The franchise has now secured the services of a terrific coaching staff with both experience and a lust to prove themselves.
This isn’t to say anyone in their right mind thinks Rod MacQueen and Damien Hill don’t have a hard road ahead of them. Player recruitment from scratch is never an easy task, yet I have faith these two ‘gentlemen of rugby’ can make the best of this situation.
I am Victorian rugby player and fan. I learnt about the game through the VSRU system, a proud and competitive league which thrillingly produced two Australia Schoolboys this year.
Combine that number with the two produced by the Victorian club ranks and it’s clear Vic Rugby is going places. Now, don’t confuse my passion with arrogance I understand this year was more fruitful that most but I honestly think that this proves Victoria has something to offer the rugby world.
Waffling aside, this article was written for a purpose. To answer the question I have been asking myself again and again, “who will play for Melbourne in their debut year?”
Out of curiosity I made a little list of names. As I thought of more names, I crossed off others and replaced them. Soon, this list had turned into a squad.
Now, there will be limits to the future Melbournian squad. Money, age, nationality, current obligations, etcetera will all play a part. I don’t envy the people with the job of courting the players. Priorities will have to be set; a perfect combination of stars, journeymen and Victorians will be hard to find.
Now, as I said above I wrote myself up a blueprint to a squad just like this. A squad I would love to have represent my state.
Current contract obligations didn’t play a part in my hypothetical squad. Nowadays, players are often granted early contract exemptions when they have good reason, most recently Aaron Mauger.
No team wants to pay a player whose heart isn’t in it. In the following list of names you may notice a few Sydney Uni up-and-comers, Damien Hill was a Sydney Uni coach after all, and a few more Victorians than one would expect. It wouldn’t surprise me if the final squad is similar in this respect.
Take a trip into the world of rugby “what-ifs”. Come next year I could see the Melbourne squad looking something like this:
Props:
Rodney Blake, Matt Dunning, John Uglia (Victorian), Agustín Creevy (Argentinian), Tevita Mailau (AUS eligible).
Hookers:
James Hanson, Ole Avei (Victorian).
Locks:
Hugh McMeniman, Pat O’Connor, Cameron Treloar, Levan Datunashvili (Georgian),
Open-Side Flankers:
Beau Robbinson, Julian Salvi.
Blide-Side Flankers:
Dylan Sigg, Siviteni Mafi.
Number 8s:
Tamati Horua (Victorian), Talelei Gray (Victorian).
Scrum-Halves:
Agustin Figuerola (Argentina), Jeremy Sua, Phil Mack (Canadian).
Fly-Halves:
Brock James (Victorian, kind of), Mike Hercus (American).
Centres:
Lloyd Johansson (Victorian), Rex Tapuai (Victorian), Ben Tapuai (Victorian).
Wings:
Tim Finau (Victorian), William Ryder (Fijian), Peter Betham, Mark Gasnier.
Fullbacks:
Christian Lealiifano (Victorian), Michael Pike (Canadian/AFL).
How great would that be! A few thing influenced the make-up of the hypothetical squad, as they will influence the make-up of Melbourne’s actual squad.
Firstly, you will probably notice the lack of Phil Vickery, Brian O’Driscol or the like. The truth is in 2011 Tier 1 national players will be hunting for a World Cup berth.
As such the players making up the squad are from the smaller nations without professional set-ups. Not only is this practical but the rugby world as a whole would benefit from this.
Secondly, this squad has a huge quantity of Victorians, 10 in fact.
This is a Victorian team and as such should include as many established players from the region as possible. All of these men have experienced high levels of Australian Rugby and deserve their spots. There are no slouches in this squad. This side isn’t just about winning it’s about representing Victoria.
Thirdly, there is only 6 non Australians are in this squad. 10 non-Australians just aren’t necessary for this team.
The Force caused issue by recruiting aggressively from Queensland but this squad’s Australian players come from diverse sources and as such won’t cause a problem for the other teams. International players won’t be that necessary.
Another reason to leave these spots open is because of the fact many of the next bests playing in Victoria Premier Division are non-Australian players. International player spots must be left open so that players can fill in if injury strikes.
My fond hope is that somewhere along the line a Rebels higher up reads this, considers it and laughs about how close it is to the list they’ve drawn up. But really, who knows?
I end this article with a question and some food for thought. The question, “who would play for your ideal Melbourne Rebels in 2011?”.
And the food for thought, picture the Melbourne Rebels rolling out in a year with a 22 looking a little something like this:
1. Matthew Dunning
2. James Hanson
3. Rodney Blake
4. Hugh McMeniman
5. Pat O’Connor
6. Dylan Sigg
7. Beau Robbinson
8. Julian Salvi
9. Agustin Figuerola
10. Brock James
11. Peter Betham
12. Lloyd Johansson
13. Rex Tapuai
14. Mark Gasnier
15. Christian Lealiifano
16. John Uglia
17. Tevita Mailau
18. Levan Datunashvili
19. Tamati Horua
20. Jeremy Sua
21. Ben Tapuai
22. Mike Hercus
Now that would be a 22 we could be proud of.

If only the Force had had such a focus on local players when they started up. I hope you get most of those players, except for Hanson, MMM and Rodney Blake.
Try for Elsom too, who is also Victorian, although learned his rugby in Qld.

I would expect maybe a couple of Vic players in the main squad at bestm but for them to look to grab as many schoolsboys players as possible for the Academy side. That way in a few years time they will hopefully have a more Victorian flavour. They certainly seem able to prodcue some schoolboy talent recently!!

Nice attempt Nick, good stiff and many players I am not familiar with. No Digby?
Lindommer said | January 25th 2010 @ 7:59am | Report comment
The Rebels should do their best to relieve the Tahs of one of their surplus hookers, preferably Freier. It’s a crying shame this bloke isn’t in a run-on spot with a Super side.
Tevita Mailau, how’s he Australian-eligible?
Nicholas Piva-Giblett said | January 25th 2010 @ 12:19pm | Report comment
Hanson is a former Victorian cult favourite from the ARC rebels. He Is a true try-scoring hooker.
This shows both his willingness to play out of Melbourne and a previous connection.

Mailau is Australian born believe it or not. From Manly.
This article is littered with terrible little mistakes, if I ever write one again I’ll proof read it when I’m not so tierd. Aren’t the roar guys meant to edit the mistakes? Still, the point remains. Out of the Vics listed many are already proven S14 players.
I didn’t put down Digby because the Reds fans would cry wolf.

Author, “Aren’t the roar guys meant to edit the mistakes?”
Um, no. They tend to get the most glaring ones, but ultimately it falls to you.

According to his Wikipedia entry, Tevita Mailau was born in Auckland, Enzed and not in Manly (which Manly — Qld or NSW?) as you stated. Now I realise that Wikipedia is not always right — in fact it’s often wrong — so you may indeed be right. But at the moment we have two contradictory statements and in order to resolve this it’s going to come down to the reliability of sources. So I was wondering what basis you have for saying that he’s Australian-born (and indeed what basis the wikipedia editor has for saying he’s NZ-born — but I doubt you’d be in a position to answer that question). I’m not saying you’re wrong, just seeking confirmation of your statement. Do you have it on good authority that he’s Australian-born (eg you were present at his birth, you’ve seen his birth certificate, you’ve been told by his mother where he was born etc, etc, etc)? Or have you just heard this information second-hand (in which case we aren’t really any closer to solving the question).

It isnt gospel but it is more believable than Wikipedia. Either way there would be enough foreign spots to have him.

I don’t know much about Agustin Figuerola but we seem to have a few scrum half options running around in Oz at the moment. Loath as I am to suggest poaching Queenslands talent again, they do seem to be the production line at the moment. Lined up behind Will Genia are Richard Kingi and Ben Lucas. There are others around the country who are going to be playing 2nd fiddle a lot too.
To lay off the Reds a little, Matt Toomua might be looking for more game time too.
Of course I don’t know the contract situation of all of these players.
I’m also not suggesting any of those I’ve mentioned have Victorian connections – just looking for those that could be ripe for the plucking. A few ‘home grown’ players for the Rebels would be great but let’s also hope that the Rebels have the same ability as the early Brumbies to inspire and develop those that had been undervalued or underutilised in their ‘home’ states.
Nicholas Piva-Giblett said | January 25th 2010 @ 12:14pm | Report comment
Certainly.
But I do think we could see a similar ammount of professional out of Victoria as there were out if the ACT.
The Argie scrumhalf is the fella who played against Wales. A real live-wire.
Based on my research he is currently off contract. However I’m only human
and could be wrong.
I’d be avoiding Qld players like the plauge if I was the Rebels. Nobody wants another three years of moaning and groaning. Though I guess they had reason.

I’ve just re-read your article and have spotted our point of difference: You’re not a New South Welshman.
For us the moans and groans of Queenslanders is music to our ears.

Good read Nic!! Isn’t Mike Hercus an Aussie though??? (played briefly for the Tahs by memory), so not sure if he is a dual citizen or not, anybody know??
He may want to come back & prove a point or 2.
Nicholas Piva-Giblett said | January 25th 2010 @ 12:26pm | Report comment
Hercus plays semi-professionally for the Sunshine Coast in Qld Premier grade.
I’m pretty sure he does this because European rugby mucks up his USA commitments.
This shows he will work for cheap. He is a good player and S14 has little impact on his rep duties.
Just saying!
Mike G said | January 25th 2010 @ 1:02pm | Report comment
Yeah i thought I heard someone say he was back in Oz…Anyway, I seem to remember him playing for the USA way back at the 2003 world cup. If he’s still got that touch then he’d be a good bench option

Good Call – I’d love to see Mike Hercus in Super Rugby

That team would not win 1 super 15 game.
Go after the aussies in Japan, Gerrard,McMeniman,Hilgendorf,Radike Samo, Craig Wing
Current wallabies off contract
Start with Pocock,Elsom,Barnes,AAC,Peter Hynes,Benny Robinson,Matt Dunning,Palu
Now we are talking, build your victorians around this
Nicholas Piva-Giblett said | January 25th 2010 @ 9:48pm | Report comment
I humbly disagree.
Perhaps a couple more of those guys warrant inclusion but this franchise will be limited by money. There is no way all those players listed could be afforded.
Though thanks for bring Samo and Wing to mind. I didn’t even think of them.
