On Sunday 30th January, my wife and I attended the Melbourne Victory vs Gold Coast A-League match. We have been members for five years and have become passionate supporters of Melbourne victory.

We not only enjoy the football, but also the atmosphere, especially the northern terrace fans who keep the singing and entertainment going throughout the game.

I return to the UK regularly to see Manchester United games but I have never seen fans chant and move in unison as the Melbourne north end fans do.

When there is a dull patch in the game they keep the entertainment going. I have never seen any trouble or fighting by the fans.

However, I could not believe my eyes when I saw first hand the heavy handed treatment that was meted out to them by the police and the security staff at the game.

The amount of security staff was just a joke and the heavy handedness of the police was totally unnecessary. Myself and the wife were shocked and upset.

We grew up with football violence in the ’80s and’ 90s and have witnessed it first hand. I can tell you now you do not have football hooligans at Melbourne Victory. They are passionate supporters, young and old. They will continue to be loyal supporters in the future and attract more fans to the game.

We also went to Etihad stadium on Wednesday against the Jets, and again the amount of police and security staff was not necessary.

Why do you need so many security and police guarding an empty section of the ground?

Can it be explained what is wrong with waving banners and shouting your opinion of the players. I can tell you now if you want to see hooligans go to the UK and see a game.

The way the security staff stare at and intimidate the fans is appalling and bound to cause friction. I would love a response from the Victory because I am dumbfounded by your actions refusing admission of people with banners and flags.

I know flares are lit, and it should be stoppe,d but not by loosing thousands of your fans in the process.

The fans are the future of the game not the players, officials, directors, etc. Without the fans you will be nothing and all out of work.

Signed – a 51 year old disillusioned Melbourne Victory fan (possibly going red and white)

PS. Football is a passionate game.
