Greater Western Sydney football manager Graeme Allan has boldly forecast an AFL premiership for the new team by 2015-16.
GWS will join the league next year as the 18th team and it is seen as the riskier of the two expansion clubs, following Gold Coast’s debut this year.
Allan is an experienced club administrator who was involved in Collingwood’s 1990 premiership and Brisbane’s 2001-03 three-peat.
“That’s the plan – whether it happens, I can tell you I’m very confident now,” he told Channel Nine’s The Footy Show.
“Lots of things happen in between times.
“I’ve been involved in premierships at two clubs and I think I know how to (build) a premiership list.”
GWS are in the market for uncontracted players, with Melbourne’s Tom Scully and young Western Bulldogs star Callan Ward said to be in their sights.
“We’re active in the marketplace and we’re doing the best for our club,” Allan said.
“The (recruiting) rules were made with all clubs agreeing upon them – so get over it.”
Allan also reaffirmed that Kevin Sheedy would coach next year, with Mark Williams as his main assistant.
“Sheeds, if I can give the analogy, is like (Sir) Alex Ferguson, overseeing it, the whole operation,” Allan said of the Manchester United manager.
“It would probably be difficult for a lot of people, but because they (Sheedy and Williams) have such great respect for each other, the system works well.”
