Fabio Borini injury huge blow for Liverpool

Liverpool has been dealt another huge blow with the news that marquee transfer Fabio Borini will miss at least three months of football due to surgery on his fractured foot.

The Reds striker is believed to have sustained the injury in the club’s 2-1 loss to Manchester United at Anfield and then aggravated it whilst away on international duty with Italy last weekend.

Liverpool posted the following statement on its website:

“Liverpool have confirmed Fabio Borini is to undergo an operation on a fractured bone in his foot.

‘Borini was assessed by the club’s medical team upon his return to Melwood and a decision was made for the 21-year-old to have surgery. Typically, an injury of this nature requires a three-month rehabilitation period…”

Liverpool bought Borini from Roma over the summer transfer window for £10 million with the thinking that he could provide some much-needed depth and class to the Reds attack in both the English Premier League and Europa League this season.

Yet through his first five Premier League matches, Borini is yet to find the back of the net and has not been the attacking force that Reds fans would have desired.

And now with the injury, Liverpool faces a very difficult three-month period where it only has one true striker on its books, Uruguayan international Luis Suarez.

The Merseyside club has showed so far this season that it’s still one of the toughest sides to beat in the English Premier League, but they simply haven’t been able to pick up the goals or the points that would reflect this.

It currently sits in 14th position with just six competition points — a job that seemingly just became so much more difficult with the news of Borini’s injury.

Brendan Rodgers will likely be forced to make a move in the January transfer window and bring another striker into the club with players such as Klaas Jan Huntelaa or Demba Ba, who were both linked to the Reds this winter.
