The Blues play the Highlanders in Auckland tonight, and after a good start this season the Blues have gone on to lose three on the trot and are looking pretty shaky come round eight. Join us for live scores from 5.35pm AEDT.

Tough losses to the Bulls, Tahs and Chiefs have left them looking like pretenders again.

With backs like try-scorers Charles Piutau, Frank Halai and Rene Ranger, frankly you’d expect more from this team.

These three players are not only lightning quick but in seriously good form. All the Blues have to do is give them the ball and watch the jets get lit. Defenses get carved up. Fans go mental. Tries get scored.

Perhaps the link is a touch slow at halfback; the Blues may well regret dismissing Alby Mathewson for Piri Weepu.

The former is doing amazing things at the Force, while the latter appears a bit of a plodder.

Weepu does however have a knack of doing wonderful things at critical times.

The time is nigh.

The Blues are in the top quarter of the comp in terms of attacking and defensive stats, yet currently sitting eighth on the log. This shows they haven’t figured out how to win.

They’ll want to change this but luckily for them the Highlanders are in a worse place, having lost all their games this year.

The southerners will surely be considering sacking Nonu for a game or two.

If Highlanders coach Jamie Joseph wants to know how this season will turn out for his star signing, all he has to do is take a look at Nonu’s previous 48 Super Rugby seasons to know that the man won’t perform like he no doubt wants him to. It’s a given.

What must also frustrate the coaching staff is their quality of rugby across the park has actually been pretty decent, even though they’re losing week after week.

With nine All Blacks, and good All Blacks at that, you’d want to be in playoff contention. Minimum.

Kade Poki, Ben Smith, Hosea Gear, all at the very top of the ladder for individual attacking stats. These guys are as good if not better than the Blues’ back three.

Tonight’s game might produce fireworks – some of the best attacking players in the comp, all in one place, hammer and tongs.

Let’s find out. Join us at 5.30pm AEDT tonight on The Roar, the place to be for live scores and where you can have your say on the go.
