Junior World Cup winners Jan Serfontein and Pieter-Steph du Toit have been included in Heyneke Meyer’s first senior Springbok squad of 2013.

Bulls centre Serfontein and Sharks forward Du Toit were among 36 players called up by South Africa coach Meyer on Tuesday for a three-day training camp starting this weekend.

Winger Bryan Habana and fly-half Morne Steyn were retained by Meyer despite their intention to move to France this year. But lock Andries Bekker was left out after he announced he will move to Japan at the end of the Super 15, possibly signalling the end of his international career.

Cheetahs centre Robert Ebersohn also earned a call-up for the mid-season camp, with Meyer already planning for a four-nation tournament in June also involving Scotland, Italy and Samoa.

Mid-season training camps were a feature of Meyer’s first season in charge last year, and he said on Tuesday he’d held meetings with coaches in South Africa to ask them to again release players to the national squad during the Super 15 season.

“With minimal time to prepare for the series involving Italy, Scotland and Samoa, we’ve approached the franchises, in line with the IRB regulations, to ask for their assistance with these two camps,” Meyer said.
