I took some timeout last week and met up with the promoters of the Australian Fighting Championship to discuss their upcoming fightcard.

Their next event is at the Melbourne Pavilion on the 10th of May and the fightcard is stacked with 13 scheduled fights and the start of two eight-man tournaments for both the middleweight and the welterweight divisions.

The winner will advance to the next round (which will take place in August) and then to ultimately look to crown a champion (sometime in November).

In the middleweight tournament fighters like Daniel Kelly (four time Judo Olympian), Vik Grujic, Bor Bratovz (from Slovenia) and Cole Davids (from NZ) will feature.

In the welterweights Dean Purdon and Zein Saliba (both undefeated) as well as 15-fight veteran Corey Nelson will feature.

The five other fights will include the main event lightweight title fight between Rusty McBride and Daniel Hooker (a rematch from AFC3), a bantamweight fight of Joel Fisher vs Jordan Lucas, the return of Ian Schaffa (holds a KO win over Genki Sudo via spinning head kick) vs Kieran Joblin from NZ, a featherweight fight between Ivo Dos Santos (also former Olympic Judoka) VS Rory O’Connell and a WMMA fight between Lana Kate and Amy Adam.

Here is the action from Schaffa’s fight against Sudo:

The AFC is a MMA promotion operating out of Victoria, Australia which has a structure of events to be hosted on a quarterly basis.

They have a wide variety of both domestic and international fighters across eight weight divisions and appear to the have the fighters best interests at heart.

This will be their fifth event and I have attended one already. There is little delay between the fights.

The crowd was pretty vocal but were well behaved and the AFC have had such fighters on their books such as Soa Palelei and Hector Lombard who have both gone on to sign contracts with the UFC.

The AFC say they are all about providing a platform for their fighters to help gain recognition and establish themselves within the sport which appears to the be the case.

AFC have a free smartphone app and via their website can stream the fights live on pay-per-view online.
