The Melbourne clean-out under new coach Paul Roos has begun, with five AFL players delisted and assistant coaches Leigh Brown and Brian Royal also out the door.
The players – James Sellar, Tom Gillies, Troy Davis, Josh Tynan and rookie-lister Tom Couch, son of Brownlow medallist Paul – join retirees Aaron Davey, David Rodan and Joel Macdonald in departing.
The Demons have already appointed one coaching replacement, with North Melbourne’s Brett Allison leaving the Kangaroos to join Sydney 2005 premiership coach Roos’ team.
But according to his manager, Melbourne’s 2008 No.1 draft pick Jack Watts won’t be joining the Demons player exodus.
Paul Connors, who six weeks ago said his client wanted to find out who would coach the club next year before committing, was on Wednesday spruiking Watts’ loyalty.
“He’s excited, he’s spoken to Paul, Jack is so loyal,” Connors told Melbourne’s SEN radio.
“I reiterate that all AFL footballers, it’s a brutal game but overall AFL footballers – you’ve got to take your hat off how loyal they are.
“Jack’s no different and I’m hopeful we’ll be able to sort something out with Jack and the Melbourne Football Club soon.”
Royal, who played 199 games with the Western Bulldogs, has been in coaching roles with various clubs for the past 18 seasons.
Brown, a 2010 premiership player with Collingwood after previously playing with Fremantle and North Melbourne, has spent two years with the Demons.
