Gone are the days of the one club man. With the sports industry booming and athletes not only playing for our entertainment but for their own living, fans should get used to superstars switching teams and codes.

Eat your heart out Sydney Swans, because Buddy Franklin, the footballer who was once your biggest threat, is now chewing up your salary cap with what is set to be the biggest coup in AFL history.

$10 million for nine years, Buddy Hell…

I wish I could have been a fly on the wall when Benji Marshall was talking about his future.

The man who was once the face of the NRL and the pioneer of the modern day side-step is now trying to stamp a claim in New Zealand Rugby Union, a franchise that has more depth than Benji’s love for the West Tigers.

Lets hope Marshall doesn’t get the Blues in union as well.

An athlete who has successfully jumped ship before is Sonny-Bill Williams. The dual international is the wolf on Wall Street when it comes to the sporting business.

After controversially splitting with the Bulldogs in 2008, SBW has since made his mark on rugby, had a swing at heavyweight boxing and is now set to play in the NRL grand final this weekend with the Roosters. Bravo!

I think we’re all hedging our bets that he will return to the crusade next year if the minor premiers can turn their form on paper into more than four points on Sunday against the Eagles.

As for James O’Conner, is the NRL his next move, or will he slip into the shadows of overseas rugby union like the rest of our forgotten heroes?

With the former Wallaby star being released from his ARU contract, he is now free to roam the sporting world and hand in his report card to anyone who is brave enough to have a read, let alone take him on.

Either way he will most likely have to sidestep airport security to get there.

The plotting of clubs to lure talent is now a bigger part of sport, it didn’t start yesterday, but it is not going to slow up any time soon.

Fans should barrack for their jersey and not their marquee man, because chances are he will be someone else’s soon.

The Israel Folaus of this day and age are the beginning of a new brand of player; they represent the multiplicity of a sporting superstar.

Whether it is by choice, or a lack of, switching teams and codes should be admired not maligned in sport today.

Controversy is what makes the sporting world tick and the fans talk.
