The second game in Saturday’s Big Bash League 2013-14 double-header will see the the Melbourne Renegades play the Sydney Sixers. Follow the scores live from 7.40pm AEDT.

With the way the two teams are placed in the points table, it would be fair to say that this one is more important to the Renegades than it is to the Sixers.

The Sydney Sixers are more or less through to the semi-finals, having piled up eight points from six games but one win from their last two games would seal it for them. They wouldn’t want to go into their last league on the knife-edge and will hope to make it to the semi-finals by winning this one.

The Renegades, on the other hand, are left with no options. They lose this and they will be knocked out of this competition, but even more pertinently, they may not qualify even if they win both their remaining games.

For one, they have only four points with a couple of games in hand. Winning both will pull them through to eight points, which may not be enough in what could become an overly crowded mid-section of the points table.

Secondly, the Renegades’ defeat in the previous game to the Thunder, with almost nine overs to spare, has left them with a net run-rate of -0.65, one that that will need them to register two handsome wins to get back in terms of their NRR as well.

What makes the equation even tougher is the loss of their key personnel to national commitments.

Captain Aaron Finch, who is at the top of the run-scoring pile in this season’s tournament, is out playing for the Australian team, while their best quick James Pattinson may also miss this one for the same reason.

Dwayne Bravo’s inclusion in the squad makes up a tad for the aforementioned losses but the big question is whether he would be able to adapt so quickly to the conditions.

The Sixers are coming off a couple of very close games; one of which resulted in a Super Over and ended in a defeat and the other saw the edge out the Hurricanes from a difficult position.

In a way, it suggests that while they possess a strong line-up on paper, it may not be as difficult to get the better of them as their standing in the points table suggests.

On the other hand, the coming together of captain Steven Smith, Nathan Lyon and the now-fit Michael Lumb has allowed them to play together as a unit over a few games and it may not be an easy task for a depleted Renegades side to overcome them.

The Renegades can be expected to come out hard at the Sixers for this one since they aren’t left with any other alternatives. And that is what should make this one an exciting one.
