The Big Bash League 2013-14 finals action continues on Wednesday with the Sydney Sixers taking on the Perth Scorchers in the second semi-final at the SCG in Sydney and you can follow the scores live from 7.40 pm AEDT.

The last time the Sixers and the Scorchers clashed in a BBL game was in the group stages of this season’s competition.

And if the entertainment it provided the fans is any indication to go by, then one can expect a thoroughly exciting encounter between two teams were quite neck in neck throughout the league stage.

The Sixers ended with a win more than the Scorchers but the team from Western Australia managed to pip Sydney in their match-up in the Super Over after the game had ended in the only tie of this edition.

Brett Lee had scalped four in that one and was chiefly responsible in keeping the Scorchers down to 153 but at 2/0 after four deliveries, it could have been a lot worse for Perth. Captain Simon Katich and Sam Whiteman provided the rescue act with half-centuries.

In reply, the Sixers suffered a collapse of their own when they slumped to 4/20 at one stage, but there was another captain’s innings in the game – from Steven Smith – that took them to very close to winning the encounter.

With 32 needed from four overs and a well-set Smith at the crease, the game was theirs to be lost and they managed to scrape through 31 of those runs. Yasir Arafat’s four-wicket haul turned things around to push it into the Super Over where the Sixers panicked and handed the Scorchers the game.

For this one on Wednesday, a couple of the heroes from that match will be absent.

Smith is in South Africa, as is his deputy Moises Henriques, which means the Sixers will be captained by Marcus North for this one. The loss of those two players will not only hit the Sixers’ batting and bowling reserves but also affect the on-field leadership.

The Scorchers will also be without Arafat, whose injury ruled him out of the competition, while Shaun Marsh was supposed to be on the flight to South Africa but suffered fitness issues.

What both teams will need to do focus on are those who are available for this match.

For instance, the Sixers will welcome back the likes of Ravi Bopara, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, all of whom were involved in international action.

The Scorchers will be pleased with the return of Nathan Coulter-Nile while hoping that Pat Cummins can rediscover his mojo, having conceded aplenty in the two games he’s played so far.

The team selection for the Sixers will be more or less on expected lines with Josh Lalor and Mark Cosgrove expected to miss out. But the Scorchers could look at bringing in two spinners for the game in Brad Hogg and Michael Beer if the pitch and the boundary distances command accordingly.
