Shane Heal has sensationally quit as coach of Sydney Kings just minutes after his side crashed to a defeat against Wollongong Hawks.

Needing a victory to keep their finals hopes alive, the Kings’ season ended after suffering a 100-87 defeat against their arch-rivals at WIN Entertainment Centre.

“I wanted to finish with the Kings on a high after we made a run for the finals and that’s why I won’t be putting my hand up to do this job again,” he said.

“I’ve been thinking about this since Christmas.

“I’m really disappointed to finish on this note.

“I haven’t told anyone about my decision, except my family, but that’s the way it is.”

Clearly shell-shocked player Ben Madgen could only look on in disbelief as his coach and mentor delivered the news.

“I’m extremely disappointed,” Madgen said. “It’s the first I’ve heard of it.

“I’ve loved playing for Shane and he’s the best coach I’ve played with. I give him a lot of credit for the player I am.”

Alluding to the lack of players re-signing until only three weeks ago, Heal said the situation was “extremely frustrating”.

Saturday’s final game of the season against the Townsville Crocodiles at Qantas Credit Union Arena will now be Heal’s last as Sydney Kings coach.

“I’ve loved playing for the club, but I feel like this is the right decision,” Heal said.

“It’s been frustrating at times this year, but I think it’s time to shake people’s hands and look them in the eye and say goodbye.

“I also want to thank the fans for their support over the past couple of years.”
