Does roller skating have a future in Australian sport?

In the last millennium, it was common to see people skating on the roads and going to roller rinks, but times have changed for roller skating.

As an avid roller skater, I don’t see why this is, but the common themes are cost and insurance.

Has this country grown out of skating or is it just not ready to have a roller hockey or speed skating league?

Roller hockey seems like a great sport and doesn’t have as many risks as the related sport of ice hockey. So why is ice hockey becoming more popular in Australia with roller hockey and other roller sports decreasing?

Ice speed skating is also quite popular and, like ice hockey, is in the Winter Olympics. Why aren’t roller hockey and speed skating in the Olympics?

In Sydney, the past 10 years have seen the closure of once very popular roller rinks. I see that as a shame, as many people can’t travel for an hour a few times a week just to play a sport they are interested in. But even with the closure of these rinks, it is possible to play these sports in other sporing halls.

People may think that it is a waste of money bringing these sports here, as roller skating has no place in Australian culture, but I am positive it will not be a waste of time.

As Australians we should break off the path of constantly following the USA and start our own sport clubs. Let them follow us!
