The Titans need a new poster boy

As a die-hard Gold Coast Titans fan it is painful to watch the team you love continue to fall.

While coaching issues will be sorted out, the fans or, in this case the lack of fans at games, is a worry.

I personally think the Titans need to invest in a player who can become the face of the club for years to come. I would pick Aidan Sezer as he the best up and coming halfback at the Titans.

He’s young and of Indigenous decent which is a big bonus for Preston Campbell’s former club and one that was so integral in the establishment of the Indigenous All Stars. The Titans should aim all their marketing around Aidan, make it so every 10 year-old on the Gold Coast grows up telling their parents they want to be just like Aidan Sezer.

Every other club you can think of in Australia has a poster-boy their marketing is based around and that young children aspire to be like.
• Sydney Roosters – Sonny Bill Williams
• South Sydney Rabbitohs – Greg Inglis
• Melbourne Storm – Billy Slater
• North Queensland Cowboys – Johnathan Thurston
• Manly Sea-Eagles– Daly Cherry-Evans
• New Zealand Warriors – Shaun Johnson
• Parramatta Eels – Jarryd Hayne

The same can be said for the AFL as well, almost every club has at least one player who is the centre of the club. On the Gold Coast, every young kid will eventually know the name Gary Ablett and they will grow up saying I want to be just like Gary Ablett, while the Titans don’t have anyone like that.

I also believe the Titans need to have an image that they stand by. At the moment I believe it is “we give up”. They should be aiming for an 18th man, idea taken from the Seattle Seahawks 12th man motto or something along those lines that they can market across the holiday strip.

The Titans need to encourage home attendance because the atmosphere at the game is unbelievable. The atmosphere was amazing the last time I witnessed a crowd at Robina which was greater than 23,000 fans.

I believe the Titans can use this as a fresh start, now that Michael Searle and John Cartwright have parted ways, to allow for a new side to be formed. This would be the perfect time to get fans interested in the club again.
