Coach Trent Robinson says the Sydney Roosters are building to their premiership winning best a month out from the NRL finals series.

Robinson led the Roosters to the premiership in his first year in charge in 2013, but the premiers have largely struggled to rediscover that form this season.

A gritty if somewhat uninspiring 26-18 win over the Gold Coast at a rain soaked Allianz Stadium on Monday helped the Roosters keep their grip on a top-four spot with four rounds to play.

When asked how close he felt the Roosters were to producing their best, Robinson replied: “I can feel it coming … we’ve just got to prove that.

“We wanted to perform in some areas that were important to us. Some of them we did and some of them we didn’t.

“I’m not going to say it was a perfect game from us,” he said.

“We had to win that game. You can look at negatives but that was the positive. You celebrate those ones.

“There been some trip ups from teams in the last few rounds and were had some of those games, it was an important win for us.”

The Roosters have dropped matches to Newcastle and Cronulla in recent weeks leaving some to question their true premiership credentials.

Man of the match James Maloney’s continued return to form for the Roosters was a highlight for the premiers.

The Roosters face the embattled Wests Tigers at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday night.

“Everyone should look forward to playing at Leichhardt Oval,” Robinson said.
