Next Friday, 12th September 2014 will be when the season proper commences.

Eight teams play off in order to get to the grand final and one of those sides will be looking forward to claiming victory on October 5.

It is truly wonderful that South Sydney, the game’s favourite team and last year’s premiers, the Sydney Roosters are in contention for both the minor and major premiership titles.

Need I remind you that in big games it is experienced players that will bring composure to a team during a difficult situation and a good semi final team will know that the game will be won in the defence.

Semi Final Football is a hell of a lot different to normal round footy. Everything is on the line for one of the teams and they have to play out of their skin if they are to win. The added pressure on the teams is why the finals are so exciting.

With the results riding on one game, it is a pressure that even successful sides like Souths have difficulty adjusting to.

The Bunnies’ inability to get into a grand final thus far since 1970 tells the true story of how tough a premiership is for any side.

Cronulla have been in the competition for over 50 years and have not won a premiership, and obviously they are facing a difficult task next year – but footy is a strange game, so anything could happen.

The funny thing about rugby league is that when we are all so certain of a team going to win the premiership from Round 1, it is in fact incredibly optimistic, simply because it is one long and windy path up treacherous mountains and down some deep valleys.

There is not too much difference between the teams at the top of the competition and there will no doubt be some unexpected results in the coming weeks.

I am a Broncos fan, so obviously I am crossing my fingers – but by the same token will enjoy this year’s finals series regardless of who is playing.

Real Footy starts in September.
