The V8 Supercar lap record will be on the line again when qualifying begins today for the Bathurst 1000. Join The Roar for live coverage of the V8 Supercars qualifying from Mount Panorama at 9:30am (AEDT).

Yesterday it was all about David Reynolds as the Ford driver set the fastest ever lap around the circuit in a V8 Supercar.

His lap of 2:06.3714 is now the benchmark in V8 Supercars and the time everyone will want to beat.

The other teams will have plenty of time to break the record with another two practice sessions, and a qualifying session today.

It all starts at 9:30 this morning with a 45 minute session for the co-drivers.

All drivers will then be able to compete in Practice 5 at 1:10pm.

The 50 minute session in the afternoon is the last chance for teams to fine tune their car for qualifying which begins at 3:00pm.

When it hits 3:00pm, it will be on, as teams try to qualify for the top ten shoot-out on Saturday afternoon.

At the end of qualifying, positions 11-26 will be filled, and the top ten order will be finalised. Being in the top ten is extremely important.

Not only does it get your team prime time viewing during the shoot-out, it also gives you a better chance of winning the race.

The last team to win the Bathurst 1000 from outside of the top ten was Greg Murphy and Steven Richards in 1999. They went from 12th to 1st in that edition of the Bathurst 1000.

Being in the top ten is vital for remaining in contention for the race. So who are the contenders for the top ten?

Based on yesterday, it could be a close fought contest for a spot in the ten with less than two seconds covering the first 18 cars, and one second covering the top 11 cars – it promises to be a close fight!

Up to 20 cars are in contention for a spot in the top ten and there will be surprises in the shootout on Saturday.

Ford Performance Racing looks strong with their two cars, as does the Bottle-O entry of David Reynolds, who was the fastest yesterday.

Both Holden Racing Team entries also look strong despite the crash to Garth Tander in the final session yesterday.

Brad Jones Racing also looks good with both entries in the top five in Practice 3 yesterday.

The New Zealand drivers, Scott McLaughlin and Shane Van Gisbergen, also finished in the top ten yesterday and would rate their chances of getting into the shoot-out.

Nissan also showed some form with three of the four entries around the top ten after Practice 3.

Red Bull Racing will also be there with the pedigree they have of getting high results in qualifying.

It looks to be extremely open in the field and plenty of teams could be inside the top ten. Figuring out the exact ten is the million dollar question.

V8 Supercars aren’t the only category in action today with all of the other support categories in qualifying mode as well.

In some cases races begin as well, with the weekend starting early for some categories.

The Aussie Racing Cars, the Touring Car Masters, and the Carrera Cup have Race 1 today.

The Roar will provide updates of all of these sessions and races.

It promises to be another big day at the mountain with the top ten shoot-out to be decided today.
