Ford driver Mark Winterbottom’s V8 Supercars title challenge is hanging by a thread after a disappointing qualifying run on the Gold Coast.

Winterbottom will start Saturday’s 300km race on the streets of Surfers Paradise from 11th position after missing out on the top 10 shootout for pole position.

The Ford Performance Racing star trails defending champion Jamie Whincup by 297 points going into the event, which is the third last of the 2014 campaign.

Whincup safely qualified for this afternoon’s top 10 shootout, posting the third fastest-time in qualifying just behind teammate Craig Lowndes and Volvo’s Scott McLaughlin.

Winterbottom’s teammate Chaz Mostert has also been brought down to earth following his dramatic Bathurst 1000 victory earlier this month and will start Saturday’s race in 19th position.

New Zealander Shane van Gisbergen, fastest in Friday’s practice, is among the other drivers who suit up for the one-lap shootout.

The top 10 shootout starts at 12.40pm AEST with the race to begin at 2.40pm AEST.
