MATCH RESULT:

A forgettable second half ends on a dramatic note to say the least as Cirio scores right at the death to secure a 2-1 victory for Adelaide United that sends them to the top of the table.

Have to say that the Reds were more proactive of the two teams throughout the contest but the Phoenix did show up ready to play and caused trouble on the counter attack.

Adelaide with a goal at the death to secure three vital points. The Phoenix are heartbroken.

FINAL SCORE:
Adelaide 2
Phoenix 1

Two in-form teams go head to head as Adelaide United hosts Wellington Phoenix in what should be an entertaining A-League encounter. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 5:00pm (AEDT).

Adelaide are yet to truly click at home, despite a very encouraging start to the season.

The Reds only have the one home win next to their name to go alongside two draws against A-League giants Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory.

Adelaide are playing some very entertaining football, but their inability to convert their chances is costing them.

United squandered several chances last week against Sydney FC and could have easily paid a heavy price had Sydney FC’s disallowed second-half goal been awarded.

Marcelo Carrusca’s miss in front of goal in the second half pretty much up sums how wasteful Adelaide was against Sydney FC en route to a nil-all draw.

With this in mind, the focus today will be to convert pressure into goals against a dangerous Phoenix side that has the potential to complicate things.

Wellington on their day can play enterprising football. They have a good mixture of speed and creativity in attack that can crack open any defence, as evidenced by the Phoenix’s tight 1-nil win over the Wanderers last week.

With both teams in good form, there is a potential for plenty of goals to be scored.

The factor that swings this game Adelaide’s favour is Wellington’s suspect form away from home.

The Phoenix don’t often play as well when travelling abroad and another slow start here could very well see Adelaide run out big winners.

That said, Wellington should turn up with their best, and it will take a clinical performance from Adelaide to secure the win today.

Adelaide to win 2-1.
