Xavier Doherty has been picked in Australia’s squad for Wednesday’s third one day international, while young quick Pat Cummins looks set to join him at Manuka Oval.

With Mitchell Johnson being rested for the remaining three ODIs, another quick will need to be picked.

With left-armer Mitch Starc not fully fit, Cummins – who starred with the ball in the T20 series – should replace the mustachioed menace in Canberra.

With the pitches set to be slower and more conducive to spin bowling, Australia has opted to include forgotten man Doherty. His selection could come at the expense of mercurial all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, who made a duck in the second ODI at the WACA.

Maxwell has had to shoulder the spin burden in the first two ODIs and bowled OK, but his batting has been poor and is the most likely to miss out.

Cameron White and James Faulkner are also set to join the ODI squad, but both won’t be available until Friday’s fourth ODI as they are currently playing Shield cricket for there respective states. They will be given a chance to audition for a spot in Australia’s World Cup squad after both impressed in the T20 series.

Faulkner, who is fresh off being named in the ICC one day team of the year, will be keen to win back his spot from quicker bowlers Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Coulter-Nile, who have both had one good game and one poor game each in the series.

Coulter-Nile was good in Game 1, taking four wickets, but struggled in Game 2, being hit around by Rilee Rossouw, AB De Villiers and David Miller. Hazlewood was OK in Game 1 and spectacular in Game 2 where he took five wickets, and he has done more than enough to justify selection.

White was brilliant in the T20 series, especially in Game 3, where he calmly guided the Aussies home with 41 not out. He also was named player of the tournament in the recent domestic one day cup. The likes of Maxwell, Aaron Finch and Shane Watson will be put under serious pressure to perform or risk being dropped for White.

Many Roarers have been calling for Matthew Wade’s head, but it seems that the selectors will stick with the Victorian keeper given that Brad Haddin has been ruled out for the entire ODI series. I have been calling for Chris Hartley to take his place after he had a brilliant one day cup.

The remaining three matches of the ODI series are at Manuka Oval, the MCG and the SCG, on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.
