Docker Fyfe cleared of serious injury

Fremantle coach Ross Lyon says Nat Fyfe’s latest shoulder injury isn’t related to his previous issues, but the star midfielder will miss Saturday night’s International Rules clash with Ireland.

Fyfe was ruled out of the one-off Test after scans revealed he had strained the AC joint in his right shoulder while diving for a mark during the dying moments of a practice match on Tuesday.

Although the 23-year-old has been cleared of serious damage, Fremantle’s medical staff will await further assessment from a specialist before deciding how long Fyfe will need to be held back from pre-season duties.

Fyfe has a history of problems with his left shoulder, but the latest setback relates to his right shoulder.

Lyon, who is an assistant coach for the one-off Test against Ireland, said Fyfe’s injury wouldn’t have any long-term ramifications.

“We’re relieved it’s nothing to do with what he’s had in the past,” Lyon said.

“We know he’s a special player and important to our campaign, but there’s nothing you do in life without risk and this is really at the minor end.

“We’re confident he’ll be fine.”

Fyfe has established himself as Fremantle’s most-important player, with the West Australian taking out the club’s best and fairest award for the second straight time last week.

He was also named the AFL Players’ Association Most Valuable Player and finished second in the Brownlow medal count despite missing four games through suspension.
