Saints snare Goddard 2.0

It’s a name which could buy him extra patience from long-suffering St Kilda fans but Hugh Goddard doesn’t want to trade off the achievements of his cousin Brendon at the Saints.

The tall defender was nabbed at pick 21 by the Saints in Thursday’s AFL draft on the Gold Coast.

It’ll mean he’ll find himself at the same club where his cousin would go on to play 205 games after being the No.1 pick in the 2002 draft.

It’s a happy coincidence but that’s all it is in the opinion of the new Saint.

“The whole Goddard name I think, I’m really big on wanting to make my own name,” Hugh told AAP.

“That’s really big for me. Brendon has made his own brand which is a great one and I want to make my own name and earn the respect of the players and coaching group.

“Looking forward to doing that.”

Goddard joining the Saints was far from a fait accompli, with most viewing him as a top 15 pick in this year’s draft.

Despite having to wait until the first round of picks were completed, Goddard said he couldn’t have been happier with how it panned out in the end.

“To slip back to pick 21 and be able to go to the Saints, which is such a great club, is such a great honour for me and I’m really looking forward to getting into it and making the most of it,” he said.

“Being able to be on an AFL list has been my dream for so long now and to be able to stay in Melbourne is great as well.

“Honestly had no idea. I’d heard whispers before here and there but you can’t really buy into anything. You’ve just got to wait and see what happens.”
